"Little Dorrit" was a serialized novel published between 1855 and 1857. The motif of the novel was confinement and its horrible psychological impacts. The story revolves around Amy Dorrit, whose father was imprisoned in the Marshalsea Prison for debtors and was known as "The Father of Marshalsea". This masterpiece reflects the hypocrisy of the bungling government and decaying society. Splendid!

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Charles Dickens's early childhood was happy until his father was imprisoned for debt. The 12-year-old Dickens then began working ten-hour days in a boot-blacking factory pasting labels on the jars of thick polish. The shocking conditions of the factory made a profound impression on him. His anger at his situation and at the conditions endured by working-class people became major themes in his fiction. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS ISN'T THE COMPLETE BOOK, June 7, 2009
This review is from: Little Dorrit (Works of Charles Dickens) (Hardcover)
Buyer beware. What isn't clear anywhere on this edition's description page is that it's only the second half of the book: it opens with Chapter XVIII, as I found when I eagerly settled down to read. Very disappointing.
