Something Special,
By mojolo "mojo_lo" (SF, CA, USA) - See all my reviews

Little Dragon is something special, and if you're a fan of Yukimi Nagano, you will certainly enjoy it.
The album portrays the third side to Kimi's vocals that I'm aware of: - She's displayed her jazzier side on Koop's 2 albums. - On Hird's album, her vocals remind me of more of a traditional electronica vocalist, while still maintaining her unique flowing & sensual vocal style. - Little Dragon seems to be a culmination of her personal musical tastes, which also makes it difficult to fit into a defined genre. It has aspects of her Koop & Hird vocal appearances, while bringing in her 'affinity for R&B' - as stated in the bio on their website. The music comes from the heart, and if you watch their video for the track "Test" on last-fm or youtube, you can get a sense of Little Dragon's personality. Kimi let's looose and has fun, creating a wonderful collage of vocals, musical instruments and electronic sounds. My personal favorite tracks are 'Twice', 'Constant Surprises' and 'Test'. While I don't feel as strongly about 'After The Rain' and 'Place To Belong', I still appreciate how well crafted and beautiful they are. Overall, this is an inspired, enjoyable and soulful album that you will find yourself listening to from beginning to end, over and over again. There is a lot of good music coming out of Scandanavia at the moment, and this really is one of the best.

About a month ago a friend asked if I'd heard of this group and told me to check them out. I watched a couple of their videos on youtube, "Twice" and "Test," and immediately knew that I had to pick up their album. Admittedly, Electronica isn't my usual taste (I'm a fan of Erykah, Kelis, RES, Sy Smith, Omar, Macy, Prince), but I am open-minded when it comes to music - and I'm sure glad I am! Little Dragon is awesome. I especially fell in love with the lead singer Yukimi. Her voice is SO soulful and beautiful. While her music is definitely a different genre, this woman has as much soul in her voice as Erykah Badu.
I was looking for a change in my music collection, looking to expand what I listen to, and this is EXCELLENT! I enjoy the entire CD from start to finish. I've told others about Little Dragon and they like them too. It's something hypnotizing about her voice. The lyrics are also great. Fave tracks: * Twice * Test * Scribbled Paper * Constant Surprises * No Love * Stormy Weather I HIGHLY recommend this CD to those who like soul, and are open to electronica/trip-hop.

So I got obsessed with these guys via YouTube and figured I should contribute something to their cause after all the aural pleasure they've given me. Mon dieu... the rhythms are just so dope... have me bouncing round the room, swaying, digging it deeply. Although, ironically, the first tune I came across of their's was the haunting "Twice" ... a floating lullaby ... the video is so tight (later, a demo of the game "Limbo" made me revisit the band, opening my world to all their other dope tunes). Oh man, I love that song. There are many other gems on this album "No Love" ... "Constant Surprises" ....somehow a mix of old and new .... but I don't even know the names of some of the songs I love so am just going through buying up their catalogue. How can I put this... I feel such gratitude for this group and the beautiful art they've brought to my ears... We long for angels, unicorns, and double rainbows but when we have magical mythical music like this, I don't care about the other stuff!

Galatic,
This review is from: Little Dragon (Audio CD)
I saw Little Dragon just recently and was blown away. The lead singer is so expressive in her movements and her voice could move mountains. The only word I could use to describe them is galatic. Galatic in the way that Little Dragon's sound is so out of this world. I felt like I was on a journey through space, witnessing a blackhole with strong percussion and watching a star be born with excellent use of electro-beats. It's the combination of swanky vocals like a dim jazz club and the cosmic feel of the background music that makes Little Dragon an original and stunning group to listen to.

Yukimi Nagano sings a cool imitation of soul style on the eponymous Little Dragon album. In spots, her voice and inflections reminded me of Prince.
I am coming to this album from the perspective of having heard their next album Machine Dreams first. The Machine Dreams album is an advancement over this one in almost every way. More hooks, better melodies, and fuller arrangements, while still economizing with regard to the number of parts that are mixed into the final track. It just feels like a more complete product. This album seems closer to a meticulous demo tape to me, before a producer gets his hands on it. The first track, Twice, is undeniably haunting, and it's the best track on the album. The song is even more haunting with the bizarre video you can find on YouTube. I can't enthusiastically recommend this album, unless you strongly prefer a minimalist approach, without a lot of extra layers and overdubs. It's a good initial band effort that shows the potential of what the band could become. Yet I can't shake the feeling listening to some of these tracks that I'm listening to skeletons of songs. |
