Valuable Lesson Learned From The Little Drummer Boy,
By
This review is from: The Little Drummer Boy Board Book (Board book)
Once, while looking through the children's books in a Bible store, I came across The Little Drummer Boy by Ezra Jack Keats. That was, and still is, one of my favorite Christmas songs.
I picked it up and began reading, noticing that each line of the song had it's own page with pictures that lovingly captured the heart of each. When the drummer boy, with downtrodden countenance, and a look of deep regret on his face, said to Jesus that he was a poor boy too, and had no gift, I was moved and touched in my spirit since I too, felt regret that I wasn't doing or giving much to Jesus, my King. When I turned the page, the once dreary colors turned to golden hues as the boys face then shone with the realization that he really did have something to offer his king. His face filled with so much joy, he could barely contain it. He asked, "Shall I play for you?" It was at that point the realization hit---that I was doing something for God. I had been playing my music for Him with the children's church and with my Bible study. But since it didn't seem hard to me, but was something I loved, I wasn't looking at it like it was something I was doing for him. Right there in the Bible bookstore I got all choked up and could not contain my tears of joy of how good God is. It doesn't have to be hard to serve God. We just have to use the gifts and talents that He gave us. What a wonderful joy to serve God with the natural and learned gifts and talents with which He has equipped and gifted us. My eyes well up with tears, even now, just thinking about that moment. (And I still have this wonderful book too).

As a child, this was a favorite carol of mine so it's a pleasure to share this book with my preschooler. Ezra's art work is gorgeous. My preschooler can't get enough of this book.

This book is wonderful! My 2 and 4 year old daughters made me read it to them every evening during the season. They learned the words and are still singing it. Ordered the book for my neices and nephews. If you know the song, then you know how beautiful the message it.

I was disappointed with this book. I hoped it would add to my Christmas collection but the only real purpose I can see for it is to help little ones learn the song "The Little Drummer Boy." If that is your desire, it could help. As a simple story to read, however, my son was bored quickly and I struggled to READ it because it was awkward without singing it! None of the text is anything original, just the song we all know (which is a beautiful message, of course!), and the pictures didn't capture my sons attention at all. I found the art to be too stylized for my taste, too, but that's just a preference.

The artwork in this book is very beautiful. The pictures are not your normal cute type pictures for a children's book, however children will enjoy them, as well as adults. I am very pleased with the quality and value of this book.

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my 19 month-old grandson. I've always loved the story of the Drummer Boy and wanted to pass this on to my grandson. It also helped that his dad (my son!) is a drummer as well. The book is beautifully illustrated and is made of hard cardboard pages to last forever. My grandson likes to look at books and seems to enjoy this one. It was definitely worth the money.

The art is very original and gives a great feel of the wise men. I apreciated that perspective of the book (from the child's view point). I have a 4year old and 2 year old and the book leads to great conversation about what I gave give to Jesus. This is definately a book to read every Christmas.
