5.0 out of 5 stars The story does not shy away from the tragic reality of death., December 3, 2007
This review is from: Little Eagle (Hardcover)
Set in 15th century China, Little Eagle is a children's picturebook about a boy, orphaned at an early age, who is taken in by a wise Kung Fu master. When the boy observes his new guardian practicing strange movements, he starts to imitate them, learning the basics of Eagle boxing. Eventually the master accepts the boy as a student, dubbing him "Little Eagle". As a martial arts master in training, Little Eagle must work hard, but his ultimate test will come when the cruel General Zhao attacks in search of a book of martial arts secrets! The artwork is reminiscent of classical Chinese paintings, and the story does not shy away from the tragic reality of death. "The wound was deep. Master Yang knew that he was going to die. In a voice of great gentleness, he said to Little Eagle: 'They will never find the book for which they search, because that book does not exist. The secrets of Eagle boxing have lived in me. It is now in you that they will live. Respect them always and use them for good alone.'" Highly recommended.
