Really, I wish I would have bought the original. Strangely enough we had the original version borrowed from the library in the house when this book arrived. Even my 2 1/2 year old daughter prefers the original. It is so much better. The details are more vivid. The language more interesting. This version isn't bad; it just isn't AS good.

All I can say is that I love this book. As a child my mother read me this book over and over. Its message is as inspiring to me now as it was then. I can't say enough how much I love this book. It's a wonderful addition to anyones collection, young and old. Brings me to tears when I read it and think back on my childhood. I don't think I could have gotten through some of those early years without it.

Why abridge a classic?,

Just buy the REAL Little Engine That Could with its beautiful poetic lines. Skip the easy-to-read version. Little kids have a greater appreciation for real books than some people give them credit for.

Better than the original!,

I like this version much better than the original. The biggest reason is that the text matches up better with the pictures. In the original, sentences ran from one page to the next, making it hard to read aloud. In addition, the vocabulary used is simpler for young children (my daughter is currently two years old and has been enjoying this book for many months now.)

Excellent book for parents to read to young children, and for older children to read for themselves. Teaches a valuable lesson.

Little Engine That Could (The Easy-To-Read),

By Watty Piper (Platt & Munk, Publishers, 1986)
Illustrated By Mateu This book is the story about a train that overcame her own doubts about her abilities to achieve what she set out to accomplish. "Up the mountain went the Little Blue Engine. And all the time she kept saying, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...,"" (Piper, 1986, p.26). The lesson and encouragement that is depicted in this book is flawless and one that will keep you reading it time after time. Through picturesque illustrations and brilliant writing, this book is cherished by both children and adults.

this is the perfect book for my 2 year old. she enjoys studying the illustrations. it is a very pretty book.
i am not familiar with the other versions of this story, but this seems perfect to me. my only concern was, what happens to the little red engine who broke down?

The book itself is wonderful (5 stars). My disappointment was with the supplier. I was trying to get the book to my married daughter who was struggling with a frustrating job situation and needed encouragement quickly. I thought a copy of the book from her childhood would give her a boost to her confidence and make her smile, but it wasn't delivered in a timely manner. Also she thought it had been sent to her in error, because there was no indication in the shipping material that it was from me.

I like this version much better than the original one, in both writing style and illustrations. The language is more appropriate for a small child, easier to follow. My 4 year-old loves trains and loves this book, and I read it to him over and over again and never gets tired of it!
