Book Description

4 and upP and up
The Little Engine That Could, the star of the classic story by Watty Piper, has chug, chug, chugged her way into children's imaginations for nearly seventy years. Now this beloved character is a brightly colored windup train that zooms along four different grooved tracks in this new Motor Book?. The oversized board book retells the beloved story of the little blue engine that rescues a trainload of toys, bringing them over the mountain to the boys and girls on the other side. Each spread features a uniquely shaped track-the third spread unfolds to nearly two feet in length-along which the Little Engine windup toy travels as she makes her way over the mountain, uttering that famous refrain, "I think I can! I think I can! I think I can!" After play, the windup train can be popped back into the molded clamshell for easy storage. The bright, updated artwork and the inventive new format are sure to bring this timeless story to a whole new generation of fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action fetches pre-readers, December 30, 1999

This review is from: The Little Engine that Could: A Storybook and Wind-Up Train/Dutton Motorbook (Board book)
This is a charming version. The train has a third wheel that fits in a groove-tack on each page, and little eyes are riveted as the story actually chugs along. My 3, 6 (and forty-something) year old boys love this wind-up/book combo.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Little Engline that Could--Original edition--hardcover, February 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Little Engine that Could: A Storybook and Wind-Up Train/Dutton Motorbook (Board book)
After reading the "original" "retold by Watty Piper" edition, I see that the little red and blue engines were both "she"'s and not "he"'s after all. I apologize for providing inaccurate information in my earlier review. I give the Watty Piper version only 4 stars because Piper's prose is verbose. Whoever rewrote the story for the Cristina Ong version should be commended for having a very good ear for English prose--Watty Piper did not--and should consider issuing a full-length version of the story with more of Cristina Ong's illustrations.
