I'm sure others must have found merit in this book or it never would have made it into a paperback, but it was one of only two books I couldn't finish reading. The characters were just too awful to spend so much time with. I was surprised. I have read many very dark books, but this one was too long and unredeemed for me to wade through it.Sorry.

This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I read constantly. Beautifully written, fascinating plot keeps the reader guessing, and a delightful, complicated protagonist--a 12-year-old girl, growing up in the Deep South, circa 1970. Reminded me of a modern-day To Kill a Mockingbird.
