Biography

The Yardbirds are mostly known to the casual rock fan as the starting point for three of the greatest British rock guitarists: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Undoubtedly, these three figures did much to shape the group's sound, but throughout their career, the Yardbirds were very much a unit, albeit a rather unstable one. And they were truly one of the great rock bands; one whose… Read more in Amazon's Yardbirds Store

...This was the Yardbird's last significant studio album and it's pretty much the DEFINITIVE Yadbirds album as far as original material is concerned! Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Keith Relf are all present here, and the sound is pure Carnaby Street! The title tune puts the whole "Swinging London" working class-to-fame and fortune ethos in a nutshell, with a unique arrangement not found anywhere else in rock from that era, (1968). "Ha Ha, Said The Clown" revels in the circus aesthetic that was present in so much psychedelic era rock, ("Sgt. Pepper", "Strange Days", "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", etc.) and the bluesy numbers, ("Smile On Me", "No Excess Baggage",) are also quite good. Psychedelia is represented again in "Glimpses", "Only The Black Rose" and "White Summer", the last one being pure guitar showdown, with Jimmy Page fast-picking his tukus off. All in all, I can't recommend this album enough...sure there's extraneous stuff on here, but it's a rare album that DOESN'T have any! The good FAR overshadows the mediocre, and just remember: this is the same group that spun off Renaissance, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Jeff Beck Group, Blind Faith, Derek and The Dominoes and lord knows WHO else!

Trust me, it's a worthy representation of the Yardbirds' legacy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Witness the Birth of a Legend, May 26, 2006
This review is from: Little Games (Audio CD)
Originally released in 1967, this was the final album recorded by The Yardbirds before the band disbanded and then morphed into the mighty Led Zeppelin the following year.
After Jeff Beck left the group, Jimmy Page took over lead guitar, and his presence is obvious on this record. Overall, this is an excellent album that at times sounds like Zeppelin without Robert Plant and at other times sounds like Pink Floyd with Jimmy Page (a combo created by the album's overall psychedelic sound and the strong presence of Page's guitar playing). Highly recommended for fans of Zeppelin, blues-rock, or just great music in general.

To all Jimmy Page fans, if you think you have all his works and don't have "Little Games", then I recommend this you get this CD. Keep in mind it's the Yardbirds last recorded album and John Paul Jones is on a handful of the tracks. This was put together in 1968, just before the Yardbirds disbanded, which is how Led Zeppelin came to be. There are some great tracks on it including "White Summer" and "Drinking Muddy Water" studio versions. It contains a double albums worth of songs and out of that, you can condense your favorite tracks to make a great album/cd. Zep fans looking for an excuse to buy, something to add to your Led Zeppelin tangible collection, I recomend it.
