Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4--In this first installment in the series, Ali Miller buys a broken old lava lamp while shopping for treasures with Gran. While she is cleaning it, a figure forms in the wax and jumps right out from 1964 into Ali's modern-day bedroom. Now the fourth grader has three wishes before the hourglass runs out, but each one seems to bring more trouble than gratification. How will she hide the tiny lavender tiger with a full-sized roar? With some lucky maneuvering, Ali manages to keep her secret until the sand runs out. The highlight of the story is when the genie appears and speaks in '60s slang. In spite of potential for an amusing story, and some strong elements at the start, Make a Wish sort of goes up in smoke. Keeping the secret from everyone is the only conflict, and there's too little action. Gran is a strong and interesting character in the first chapter, but she fails to appear again. Fans of Mary Pope Osborne's "Magic Tree House" series (Random) and Megan McDonald's books about Judy Moody (Candlewick) may enjoy the story, but most beginning chapter-book readers can pass on it.--Sharon R. From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. Ali thinks nothing ever happens in Cocoa Beach until the day her grandmother buys her a Lava lamp at a flea market. When Ali rubs the lamp to clean it, a tiny girl genie appears in the pink wax bubbles, and Little Genie grows to full size with a snap of the finger. Unfortunately, her spells to grant Ali's wishes often go awry; Ali's wish for a tiger, inspired by an advertisement for Tiger Chocolate in a magazine, results in a real kitten-size tiger that eats only chocolate bars! First in an easy chapter-book series, this playful junior-size I Dream of Jeannie tale will appeal to children who haven't left magic behind and who groove on fantasy, fun, and friendship. The story ends with Ali thinking of her next three wishes. Illustrations not available in galley. Julie Cummins

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Little Genie: Make a Wish (Hardcover)
Little Genie was a really interesting book and I enjoyed reading it. The main characters are Little Genie and Ali. Ali's first wish is a disaster it was a TIGER! She tried to not let her mom see it. It was hard for Ali with such a wild animal to hide. I liked her three wishes even though they were kind of crazy. At night when I stopped right before what the third wish was I was so excited to know what it was I took it to school with me. I hope you read Little Genie. It was an amazing book and I enjoyed it.

Did you ever get a genie to grant your every wish? Read Make A

Wish to find out what happens, but for now I'll tell you a little about the book. The main charters are Ali, the girl who looks normal but has a genie who grants her wishes, and Genie who is very picky. The problem is that Genie skips some of her magic class so when Ali wants something tourble comes! It's about a girl named Ali who has a gradma (the queen of all junks.) One day they went to a yard sale, and grandma bought Ali a lamp from the 70's, but when Ali rubs it to make it clean Genie comes if Ali tells anyone about Genie then Genie will be trapped in the lamp forever.Genie has an hour glass with pink sand inside when the sand moves Ali gets her 3 wishes when all of the sand goes down then all of her wishes go in thin air! The reason I like this book is because it has a lot of action in it. I also loved how the author was so creative in the story. My favriote thing I love about this story is that Genie tells the funniest jokes I've ever heard. If you need an action-packed funny story you defiantly need Make A Wish

trust me!
