Is it a good idea to let a little genie pretend to be a human girl? The sparkling pink sand in Little Genie’s watch is starting to move—time for Ali to make a wish and find out!
| ||||||||||||||||||
Gr. 2-5. These first two volumes of the Little Genie series introduce nine-year-old Ali and the pint-size, pony-tailed genie she discovers in an old lava lamp. In Make a Wish! Ali finds out that having a magical patron is more complicated than she imagined. After deciding to unwish the real tiger she wished for, she learns wishes can't be undone. Oh dear! In Double Trouble Ali is determined to choose her wishes more carefully, but when she wants a day off from school, she foolishly lets Little Genie talk her into taking her place. Much of the humor and excitement comes from trying to keep Ali's wishes and Little Genie's existence a secret. The books, about the size of trade paperbacks, are illustrated with detailed, softly shaded, black-and-white drawings, which appear in bubble shapes that mimic the bubbling lava lamp liquid where Genie first appeared. While certainly not in the same league as the famous boy wizard, Little Genie offers a fun alternative for children who want lighter, easier, and decidedly more feminine escapism. Lauren Peterson

Light reading for beginning chapter book readers,
By
This review is from: Little Genie: Double Trouble (Hardcover)
It's difficult not to like this light-hearted, fun story, even if the characters seem a bit anemic and the plot a bit dull and predictable. In the eyes of 2nd - 4th grade readers, however, this book is likely 'just right.' It's suspenseful, but not scary; intricate, but not boggling; fanciful, but not hard-to-relate-to. It's a nice change from the typical early reader books and a good book for the transition to more involved chapter books. The book, the second of a 4-part series, is O.K. for a stand-alone. One nice thing about this book was that it showed a young girl dealing with challenges in a positive way and learning from her foibles; there is always a need for more books with messages like this.

Great Series!! I am so thrilled ...my 7 1/2 year old just finished this book, and to quote her, "It was soooo good!" My daughter hasn't been very interested in reading for pleasure until she discovered THIS series. She spent TWO hours reading last night because she just couldn't put it down. I will be running right out tomorrow to get the third book in the series. Thanks Miranda Jones.

This book awesome! "Double Trouble" is a really great continuation of the first Little Genie book, "Make a Wish", which I have also read, and throughly enjoyed. It is extremely funny, and the story is really, really great. The pictures are great, and go really well with the book. I can't wait to read "A Puff of Pink"! I highly recommend this book!!!
