Excellent pump for pool covers,
By
This review is from: Little Giant PCP550 Pool Cover Pump (Lawn & Patio)
Needed a small pump to remove the accumulated water from the pool cover after the snow melted. Worked in the pool industry for nearly three decades and was familiar with the brand name so I ordered this one after reading a few favorable reviews. Yes some of the important parts are plastic (the little elbow pipe for attaching a hose on the top and the debris screen), but given proper care and handling, they should last for quite a few years.
I was extremely impressed with the speed and ease of use of this little pump. It attaches perfectly to a standard garden hose and pumps water quite efficiently. Our winter pillows collapsed and the winter cover sagged into the pool, collecting about 2-3 feet of water at the deepest point. We suspended the pump above the deepest point using a rope tied across the pool and submerged it about a foot from the bottom to avoid the leaves and pine cones at the bottom. For a 20' pool, we were pumping out an average of about 3-4" per hour. Took one weekend to empty the thing to the point we could lift out the last bit of water and the debris on the bottom. There is no on/off switch so you simply plug it in to turn it on. I don't know that I would leave this pump outdoors on a permanent basis (we are in New England so it gets really cold) but to pump and remove the unit as needed, this little bugger works like a charm. I would highly recommend it to anyone not looking to leave it out year-round in icy climates. If you're just looking for a great-working little pump to clear water off your cover in the springtime, this is the one to buy. Lightweight, easy to use and most importantly it does the job well.

This is my first time ever reviewing a product because I am generally pretty easily satisfied. However, I was surprised by the poor performance of this pump considering the prior excellent reviews. I purchased this pump to use on my automatic underground pool cover. My prior $200 pump was 3 years old and finally just died. I have tried this Little Giant pump on 3 occasions and it is PAINFULLY slow. Today I had the Little Giant pump running for 8 hours and it had perhaps removed half of the water from my pool cover. I finally re-purchased my original pump and it finished the same amount of water in 20 minutes!
It is possible that I had unrealistic expectations. Most of the prior reviewers mentioned having above ground pools, so perhaps they just have a smaller volume of water to remove. I would only recommend buying this pump if you have a lot of time on your hands.

this pump has done a wonderful job in pumping out the accumulated rain from my pump cover. I have lots of leaves on the pool but the strainer attachment has kept
the pump free and clear better than any other pump I have had and I've had many. a real bargain and pleasant surprise.

This pump works very well. I have used it for a couple of months now and it works a lot better than siponing manually. I use the output hose to fill a second hose, priming it as a siphon. So this pump lets me get two hoses going without having to put my mouth on either of them. We'll see how the pump holds up, but so far I am very satisfied with it.

This is exactly what we needed to get the water off our pool cover. Don't know how we managed the past 26 years. We told our neighbors they can borrow it when needed. Figure we only need one around here.

It does its job very well, used it on my pool cover, it gets most of the water off. Screen opening is not big enough to get all the water of the cover.

works as described. I had another pump earlier which was more expensive , but did not work as well as the "little giant". just the right tool for the job at a decent price!

We have an above ground pool (approx. 35 feet by 16 feet). Our winter pool cover does not allow rain water to seep through, so the water collects and causes problems. This little pump is very efficient. You plug it in and it pumps off the water in a matter of minutes. We've used it about 4 or 5 times already with great success.

We preivously had issues with flooding on our patio deck from rain storms. We had our first need to use the Little Giant last week and it performed as we hoped it would. It kept our patio dry and pumped the water with no problems. The only issue is that you have to watch the pump so it doesn't operate without water to pump. A automatic sensor that would shut the pump off would be an added plus.

I purchased the PCP550 to pump water off my pool cover and it does an excellent job. It pumps a lot of water for its size and it is whisper quiet compared to pumps I've used in the past.
