Book Description

August 3, 1998
"All of my Bible heroes are survivors. I guess all of the people I have met in my life and I consider to be my heroes are survivors...This book is the story of a survivor. It is the story of a remarkable young woman who did not allow herself to be a victim but became a survivor. She did not look for social issues or society to blame but turned her violation and hurt into something positive, not only for her but for all of the people in her life. This is a story of God's love and grace and a lesson of life...Little Girl Lost is her story's title but the story of her life should be called 'Little Girl Triumphant.'"
--From the Foreword by Nicky Cruz

The events of Leisha Joseph's life are sensational, but the deeper story lies in her relationship to God, and in what she can now teach others who suffer from the fear and hurt that result from violence and trauma.

As the treasured only daughter of an upper-middle-class family, Leisha, as well as her brothers, enjoyed a happy childhood. When she was eight years old, all this changed abruptly with the death of her father. The strain on her mother manifested itself in wild behavior. In between frequent stays in private mental hospitals, she brought home a string of boyfriends, some of whom preferred children and made their way to Leisha's bed. After trying to burn down the house and chasing Leisha with a kitchen knife, her mother was confined to the state mental hospital. While friends and family lent a hand, it was largely up to Leisha and her brothers to keep the family intact.

Sadly, Leisha experienced the pain of isolation because of her family situation. She found God as a teenager, but that comfort did not last long. Leisha became disillusioned with Christianity and began taking drugs until an overdose had her on her knees, promising to serve God all her life if He saved her. She was sober in an instant, and has kept her promise.

Just when she had managed to turn her life around and was a finalist in the Miss Teen USA pageant, recently graduated with honors from high school, and engaged to marry a godly young man, Leisha experienced an attack at the hands of a serial rapist. Yet God intervened once more, giving her the words that would save her life and would eventually cause her attacker to confess in court. Even when he escaped and came after her, as he had threatened to do, Leisha refused to let fear dominate her life. She rejected the advice of the Witness Protection Program, instead relying on God's saving hands.

From Publishers Weekly

Until she was eight, Leisha Joseph lived a happy life in a suburban world surrounded by loving brothers and a caring mother. Her world began to fall apart in her eighth year, when her father died and her mother's mental health began to decline. In the years leading up to high school, Joseph was mentally abused by her mother and physically abused by her mother's boyfriends. When her mother, in a fit of rage, burned down the house and was subsequently placed in a mental institution, Leisha felt abandoned and alone. Attending a Protestant church with a friend, she discovered that the love of God and her newfound religion helped her to overcome her loneliness. In a moment of disillusionment, however, she gave up religion and succumbed to the attractions of drugs until a near fatal overdose drove her back to God. As she began to grow in her new commitment to God, she was showered with many blessings: an engagement to a deeply committed Christian man; participation as a finalist in the Miss Teen USA pageant; graduation with honors from high school. Suddenly, her world was shattered anew, when she was raped in a mall parking lot by a serial rapist. According to Joseph, God intervened to give her the strength to survive her attack as well as to confront her attacker in court. After the attack, Joseph prayed for her attacker and eventually gave him a Bible to demonstrate the depth of God's love for him. Joseph's dramatic and harrowing memoir reveals a faithful and courageous woman seeking to act always according to God's guidance.

From Kirkus Reviews

woman-survivor who found herself and God in the painful aftermath of rape. Joseph enjoyed a storybook midwestern childhood until she was eight, when her loving father was killed in an engineering accident. His death threw the family in a quandary: Josephs mother sank into a decade-long battle with manic-depression, and Joseph and her three older brothers were left to fend for themselves. But by age 18, the young woman and her family had turned their lives around. Joseph became a model student and committed evangelical Christian, and was elected homecoming queen. Yet her world was about to be torn asunder once again. Shortly after her high school graduation and before her marriage, Joseph was raped at gunpoint in a mall parking lot by a serial rapist who had disabled her car. Joseph again employed her faith to emerge triumphant from this dark, painful time, encouraging the rapists other victims to file charges against him. After his conviction, she continued to struggle with trauma from the rape. Her memoir speaks honestly of her fears of sexual relations with her new husband and the deep anger she had welling inside her, ready to be unleashed on the people she loved the most. Joseph found healing by speaking out about her experience, first to local church groups and eventually to a national audience on the 700 Club. She also testified in another court case (her attacker attempted to rape another woman soon after his speedy parole), even finding the courage to present the rapist with a monogrammed, leather-bound Bible, which she prayed he would read. Moving and very frank, Josephs story will offer courage to many women, Christian and otherwise, who have been victims of rape. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0 out of 5 stars Leisha Joseph, one of my favorite Authors, January 26, 2002
By A Customer
My review is based on, not only the book, but on real
life events that me and her have faced together. Hi, im the stepdaughter of Leisha Joseph. I'm not only giving the book 5 stars because she's my stepmom but, because i have read the book, and it seems, even to a 13 year old like myself, interesting. I think she deserves the 5 stars for, all the hard work she's ever done in her life. Writing a book, writing tons of childrens books like her new Christmas one that just came out. Basically, going on with her life no matter what challenges lie ahead of her, Leisha, is the most loving person i have ever met.

Leisha, I went to convention this past week in Knoxville, Tennessee and on Saturday night when you spoke, it was such a wonderful yet scary story. I was touched by how strong you are. God has been there for you a lot and I hope that if I am ever in a situation like that, I will have the Faith to do what you've done. Thanks for speaking to us.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough information about her rape recovery, December 4, 1998
By
This review is from: Little Girl Lost (Hardcover)
Being a rape survivor myself, I am always looking for books on the subject - specifically books written by survivors. The major part of the book was about her childhood. A small section was devoted to actual rape recovery - not a lot of detail. A Christian perspective on sexual assault is hard to find and she does a great job of showing that her faith is what carried her through the rough parts. The book was easy to read and I do commend Leisha Joseph for being brave enough to share her story with the rest of us.
