Who is the little girl in the red dress? Discover a unique vision of how the classic painting came to be

"That's me over the fireplace. When I was a little girl and living with my parents on the farm, Mr. Ammi Phillips came, and I sat for a portrait. Well, I almost sat. In those days, I couldn't sit still for long".

The arrival of a travelling painter is cause for great delight when the young narrator is looking for someone to play with. She's too young to help the cook, her brothers, her sisters, her father and mother. But what else can she do? Sit for a painting, of course! But it's not as easy as it looks -- sitting still isn't as much fun as playing with her cat and dog. Or is it?

The original Girl in Red with Her Cat and Dog by Ammi Phillips might have been painted in much the same setting as this striking book. Cynthia von Buhler's illustrations, reminiscent of nineteenth century American folk art -- together with Nicholas B. A. Nicholson's engaging story and helpful background note -- will appeal to children and collectors alike.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4?The title and story of this unique book are based on an actual painter and painting. Ammi Phillips was a traveling portrait artist in the 1830's. The child is a rambunctious girl whose family is too busy with everyday tasks to have her underfoot. One day Phillips arrives and it is decided that she and her pets will sit for the portrait. Illustrations feature the painting style of the time?folk-art oils done in deep reds and blues. Layout also parallels the era, using a variety of partial-, full-, and double-page spreads?some bordered in ovals and squares to resemble portraits. Visual details, too, are indicative of the period?needlepoint, china, fashion. This book has an interesting premise but will need an introduction for children to understand its historical significance. Young readers will relate to the universal theme of an "ignored" child finding her place and becoming the center of attention. Art teachers may also be able to use this title as a springboard to research and projects. While this is not a selection children will gravitate to on their own, there is plenty to interest them once they discover it.?Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI

From Kirkus Reviews

In his first book, in homage to American folk art, Nicholson imagines the story behind the painting Portrait of a Little Girl in a Red Dress with Cat and Dog in the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. The unnamed little girl narrates, describing how her portrait's creator, a self-taught artist named Ammi Phillips, traveled from state to state in the 1830s, painting farm families and depictions of country life. At her home, everyone else is too busy to pose, so she sits for the painting--and it's more difficult than she expected. While she is being painted, she gets to eat cherry tarts with the ladies in the parlor, and convinces Phillips to include Cat and Dog in the portrait at no extra cost. The first line, ``That's me over the fireplace,'' establishes a personal connection between readers and the girl, just as she establishes a connection with Phillips. In her picture-book debut, Von Buhler skillfully emulates the primitive folk-art style with characteristically solid, straight-mouthed figures and clean, flat lines. 5.0 out of 5 stars Imagination, March 13, 2000

This review is from: Little Girl in a Red Dress with Cat and Dog (Hardcover)
This book is my favorite gift for a child. I have even bought copies for adults. It's a wonderful tool for showing a child the joy of imagination. The author tells a charming story about a little girl in a real painting. Could it be true? The illustrator, magically brings the painting to life. Not only does the little girl in the red dress pose with her cat and dog but she throws the dog a stick, she stirs the cooks's soup, she eats a cherry tart. In a very subtle way the book teaches a child to open their minds as well as their eyes. To search for more than what their eyes see. In the book, the little girl looks out a window, at a peaceful country scene below and waits for something exciting to happen. I wonder if she is looking down at us now. If she knows her picture hangs in a museum and that a delightful story has been written about her. I think she does.

This book is a work of art! A charming story of historical interest with museum quality illustrations! This book is the perfect introduction to fine art for a child. Everyone who sees this book falls in love with it ! It is a favorite of my daughter's and mine. Maybe someday I will dress my young daughter in a red dress and have an artist - preferably Cynthia von Buhler - paint her in the folk style of the book!
