Fifties balladeer of real quality, May 23, 2005
This review is from: Little Girl: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
Vic Damone was one of the most popular balladeers of the fifties. In America, he had his first hit in 1947 and his first number one in 1949, but those were recorded for Mercury. The tracks here are compiled from later in his career, particularly the late fifties when he had his only UK number one hit (On the street where you live). It was one of only three UK hits he ever had - the other two barely charted and are not included here. Nevertheless, Vic is far more popular in the UK than his modest chart history would suggest.
This compilation, made for the British market, contains mostly cover versions (including one or two live performances) apart from On the street where you live. Thus, we are treated to Vic's versions of such classic songs as My baby just cares for me, The most beautiful girl in the world (the Rodgers and Hart song, not the Charlie Rich song - that hadn't been written then), Tonight, Maria, What kind of fool am I, They can't take that away from me, Call me irresponsible, I left my heart in San Francisco, Fascinating rhythm and Let's face the music and dance. As the titles suggest, Vic's repertoire was not limited to ballads but ballads are what he sings best.
As an introduction to Vic's music, this is ideal, especially at the price. Plenty of other compilations are available for those that want to explore further.
