Book Description

Falling in love might not be the smart thing, but it might be the one thing they both need.

Harmless, Book 5

Jocelyn Dupree has come to Hawaii to heal. After a horrific experience with her last boss, she is on the mend and ready to start again. She is focused on rebuilding her life and her career as a pastry chef. She definitely doesn't need a man in her life, or so she thinks.

Kai Aiona has always been the guy to mend a broken heart. Unfortunately, the last heart that was broken was his. He has sworn off damaged women, but he can't resist Jocelyn's sad eyes, not to mention her determination to succeed.

One little date turns into several and soon, Jocelyn finds herself easily addicted to Kai's sensual nature. Resisting him becomes impossible, but Jocelyn isn't ready to trust completely. When Kai discovers she hasn't been telling him everything, Jocelyn is left with two choices: trust her heart, or let the one man she has ever loved go.

Product Warnings
Scenes from Hawaii, nosey friends and family, two
people who are right for each other but too stupid to realize it, a tattooed and
pierced hero, a sassy Southern heroine, one drunken night, and love scenes that
will curl your toes, warm your heart and leave you panting for more. Remember,
Harmless stories are not for the weak.

I've been really enjoy the Harmless series and was excited to get an advanced eARC to review. This book follows Jocelyn, who happens to be Chris's sister (hero of book 2) and Kai, the brother of May (heroine of book 3). Both Jocelyn and Kai are on the mend and end up turning to each other, first as friends but the attraction between them is just too much to ignore.

After all the last 3 books in the series were exploring the world of BDSM, it was a little refreshing to leave it behind for a book. Don't get me wrong, we still get some steamy sex scenes, just without the "kinkier" side. And what I've loved about this series all along is how intertwined all the characters are, and how their stories aren't finished with the last page of their respective books, but they continue to grow as the series goes on.

So, back to Jocelyn and Kai. I enjoyed these characters, both are strong with major issues they need to work through before they can commit to each other. I suppose my one "complaint" is that Kai's broken heart seems to be equated with the same level of recovery as Jocelyn's dealing with her stalker (for lack of a better word). But overall, I very much enjoyed this book and can't wait to see who gets starring roles in the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars No BDSM but lots of sweet sweet love June 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The biggest thing I can say about this book is *sigh*.

It is another awesome installment by Melissa Schroeder in this beautiful Haiwaiian themed series. Unlike the previous books in series this isn't BDSM at all, but it's just as good!

Kai and Jocelyn are just two people who have issues and are trying to find themselves again. We have all had drama, pain, and loss and that helps us connect to these two strong characters.

Amazingly, Melissa keeps every characters unique flavor in every single book, and yet adds another dimension to them at the same time.

You can start with this book, but if you do you'll only end up going back to the beginning so do yourself a favor and just start with the first book and don't forget the shorts posted on the authors webpage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy Sweet Addiction May 28, 2012

This is the story of Kai (May's brother) and Jocelyn (Chris' sister). Jocey comes to the island in search of healing from a break up and a stalker ex-boss. Her first night there she meets sexy tattooed Hawaiian Kai. The emotions each character showed and each battle they struggled through was described very well and we are able to see how strong they are together. This book did not had any BDSM, which is fine. It did not need it for the story was steamy all by itself.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite December 20, 2011

I found myself glossing over several parts of this book. I skimmed through the emotional confrontations, glanced at the sex scenes, and pretty much finished the book in less than 30 minutes. Melissa Schroeder is usually one of my go-to authors, so I don't know what happened here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story March 14, 2013

A little more tame than some of the other books in the Harmless collection, but a good story. I like that the heroine had been through some stuff, and even though her family tries to baby her, she is real in the fact that she is tough and life goes on.

I have most throughly enjoyed the entire "Harmless" series-they are all a super good read. So let loose ladies and live a little!! These books are a light, enjoyable & fun read. The main charactors run thru all the books so you get updates as you get further into the series, you don't just drop the previous couple and never hear about them again. I am officially a Melissa Schroeder fan. I have all of the current "Harmless" & "Harmless-Military" and several of the stand alone books

More About the Author

Want to know more about your favorite military family? Join Mel on her blog every Sunday for Santini Sundays!

Born to an Air Force family at an Army hospital, USA TODAY Bestselling author Melissa Schroeder has always been a little bit screwy. She was further warped by her years of watching Monty Python and her strange family. Her love of romance novels developed after accidentally picking up a Linda Howard book. From then on, she was hooked. She read close to 300 novels in one year and decided romance was her true calling instead of the literary short stories and suspense stories she had been writing. After many attempts, she realized that romantic comedy, or at least romance with a comedic edge, was where she was destined to be.

Influences in her writing come from Nora Roberts, Jenny Crusie, Susan Andersen, Amanda Quick, Jayne Anne Krentz, Julia Quinn, Christina Dodd, and Lori Foster. Since her first release in 2004, Melissa has written close to thirty short stories, novellas and novels released with seven different publishers in a variety of genres and time periods. Those releases included a 2005 Eppie Finalist, Two Capa finalists, and an International ebook best seller in June of 2005. Surrender was named top Category Romance by Authors After Dark, and she was named Author of the Year and Most Accessible Author.

Since she was a military brat, she vowed never to marry military. Alas, fate always has her way with mortals. Her husband is an Air Force major, and together they have their own military brats, two girls, and an adopted dog-daughter. They live wherever the military sticks them, which, she is sure, will always involve heat and bugs only seen on the Animal Discovery Channel. In her spare time, she reads, complains about bugs, travels, cooks, reads some more, watches her DVD collections of Arrested Development and Seinfeld, and tries to convince her family that she truly is a delicate genius. She has yet to achieve her last goal.

She has always believed that romance and humor go hand in hand. Love can conquer all and as Mark Twain said, "Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand." Combining the two, she hopes she gives her readers a thrilling love story, filled with chuckles along the way, and a happily ever after.
