A friend had recommended Marissa Nadler last year, and I never really spent the time tracking down her music until two weeks ago. I ended up purchasing all 4 of her albums. Each one is worth owning, but Little Hells is her best effort yet, showing Marissa developing her songwriting and working with different sonic textures. I am a big fan of AZURE RAY and COWBOY JUNKIES mid/early work, and Marissa's music fits somewhere in that vein. There is something unearthly and poignant about her vocals and the accompaniment. It is like music you may have heard when you were very young on a rainy day. Definitely a beautiful sound that seeps in. I would recommend this album to everyone who is looking for transporting melodies.

A wonderful album,

LITTLE HELL is my first cd I bought by Marissa Nadler. I came across her music on Myspace a few years ago and really liked what I had heard. Unfortunately I just never got around to buying her music until on a recent trip to my local independent record store. I decided on a whim to get her new album LITTLE HELLS. I am so glad that I did. I love the production quality on the cd. It has a very live sound. I feel like I am right there watching Marissa perform her ten songs. Her delicate vocals is reminiscent of ex-Azure Ray's Maria Taylor. Normally I can only take so much of that sort of vocals before I get annoyed and turn off the stereo but not in this case. The folk melodies are a sparse which gives the tone of the album an haunting quality to it. I love listening to this album at any time of day but I really find it even more enjoyable at night before I go to bed. The music has a calming effect on me. I certainly will be placing LITTLE HELLS on my best of 2009 list before the end of the year. I absolutely love it.

the most delicious of foods,

if one wishes to experience the taste of a specific food, maybe one not tried before, no amount of detailed description can bring that flavor to the tongue. you have to eat it and dig it, or spit it out. believe me when i tell you, 'little hells' tastes sooo good! marissa nadler is a banquet amidst happy meals. her talent as a songwriter/singer/musician makes her new record so worth the the time to consume it... no point in offering details, other than to say the vocals could melt a heart of stone (as on 'heart paper lover'), the lyrics paint poetic portraits of the sad and lonely hearted ('the whole is wide') and the acoustic guitar and other instrumentation is first class all the way thru... if this album was edible, it would be the most delicious of foods...
