A Sampler For Fans Of Indie Folk Singer/Songwriters Plus...,
By Lance G. Augustine (The Midwest, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Little Indian Amazon Label Sampler 09 (MP3 Download)
We get a taste of some bigger-name indie folk singer/songwriters, sandwiched in between two Swedish melodic indie/pop bands on this fine sampler from the One Little Indian label...general production here is better-than-average for an Indie label.
Mixtapes & Cellmates start things off with a simple tune based around a light percussion groove...nothing too harsh here (actually, the whole sampler is fairly easy-on-the-ears and simple). Vocalist Robert Svensson delivers a performance in the vein of Bright Eyes...or perhaps even The Cure. There isn't much in the way of instrumentation on this peaceful tune, which includes a pleasing, melodic chorus section. Lloyd Cole comes to us from Scotland and has been in the music biz since 1984...with his low-key voice and the professional arrangement and recording, this basic folk tune is definitely a highlight of the sampler. Quality songwriting is evident here, as well as on the songs from Pieta Brown and Jesse Malin. Brown uses a Wurlitzer electronic piano and strings as the backing for the excellent "Song For A Friend"...her Shelby Lynne-type voice (with a touch of Loretta Lynn as well) and poetic musical style makes this just as delightful, and Jessie Malin, a New York folk rocker, graces us with another simple but melodic song that's sure to please his fans. Moving a little more away from the mainstream, Scottish singer/songwriter Astrid Williamson, a classically-trained pianist also proficient on guitar, flute & fiddle, plays a loose guitar and flute/organ (having more than its share of unorthodox notes both musically and vocally) and sings lines like the opener, "Cocaine & Chocolate won't keep you alive, but they might fill you up when you feel deprived". The song is still melodic enough that many should find this tune interesting and likeable. The other bookend band on this sampler, Surrounded, gives us a very good, more mainstream, ambient-sounding song called "Safe Tomorrow Sun". Slow electric guitar picking with a string/synth backing is again sonically easy listening, and the slightly folky sounding vocals make this my personal favorite. One of the better free samplers to hit Amazon in awhile...enjoy!
