Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Books in the Rebuilding Books series "for divorce and beyond" are written for those going through divorce or rebuilding their lives after divorce. Inspired by the work of renowned divorce therapist, Dr. Bruce Fisher, the Rebuilding Books offer expert information and practical self-help procedures. These straightforward, life-affirming resources can help make the divorce process easier, healthier, and less painful, leading to more-fulfilled lives and stronger "second-time" relationships.

From the Author

After twelve years of practice in the family law field, as often as I think I've seen everything, there's always some new case which is a revelation. Unfortunately, what usually surprises me are not the facts of the case, but the extent to which the parties either destroy each other or themselves in the process. The intention of this book is not to be a sit-down read. I suggest you read some portion of the book, then think about what's been said, and compare it with your own situation. Not everything will apply to your case, and you may find you have more specific questions than the answers provided here. But common sense and practical thinking will surely lead you to your healthiest conclusion.

More About the Author

Since my early childhood,I've written my way through life.

Writing was one of the few constants in my life, since my parents divorced when I was young, and I spent my younger years with my mother, and then moved in with my father when I was 9. By the time I was 14, he was divorced, and I had the primary emotional burden of raising my two sisters.

The experience was not that of most girls of that era. A single father with three girls was an oddity in the early 1970s, and carrying a large share of family responsibility was something I took for granted. It made me a stronger person, and also pushed me to escape into my fantasy world, creating characters and living a different life.

After college, I got married, worked as a newspaper reporter for awhile, had a family, and ended up divorced myself. I found being a reporter allowed me to shine the light on things that were wrong, but not to really fix them; that was something that would require the power of a legal degree. I tentatively took the entrance exams and did well, applied and was accepted at the University of Miami School of Law, with financial aid, school for my kindergartener and a preschool on campus for my three-year-old. It seemed to be fate.

After law school, I returned to the newspaper as an editor for awhile, but in 1987, opened my own practice, working exclusively in family law. I'd seen the issues from all sides - as a child, a mother, a wife - and I felt a certain empathy with people going through what must be one of the worst times in their life. The practice became one of the greatest missions of my life to help people through what could be a very technical, dry procession of legal paperwork if only their heads and hearts were not involved. In furthering that goal, I have also worked as the Solicitor for a child support collection and enforcement agency, impacting the lives of custodial parents and kids who need help. (Also where I got the nickname, "The Hammer," which follows me to this day.)

Since then I've worked with Northwestern Legal Services as an attorney and coordinator of The Blossom Project, a program funded by the U.S. Department of Justice to provide civil legal assistance to victims of domestic violence, and also returned to private practice.

Now I've been able to take my first love of writing and combine it with my career's passion and produce books which I hope will reach out to many people and give them courage to persist and stand up for their rights.

I'm currently celebrating ten years of marriage to an absent-minded computer geek; together we have six computers, seven children and a full house in Northwestern Pennsylvania.

1.0 out of 5 stars This pamphlet was a waste of $, with one sentence per page., February 23, 2000
This review is from: 101 Little Instructions for Surviving Your Divorce: A No-Nonsense Guide to the Challenges at Hand (Rebuilding Books) (Paperback)
As hard as a divorce is to go through, it's even harder to believe that a lawyer would make a mockery of it by writing one sentence on each page and call it a book. It took me exactly four minutes to read it from cover to cover. If I didn't feel fleeced going into the divorce, I sure felt like it after getting this book in the mail. No advice was given that you couldn't hear from your own mother! It cost more than $10 and it wasn't worth $1. I think that the author is cashing in on the plight and fear of people going through a divorce. I am sending the pamphlet back. Don't waste your time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANY tip in here is worth 10X the price of the book, December 26, 1999

Divorce can be liberating. But it can also be extremely painful, expensive, and nerve-wracking. Divorce is hard enough without knowing these instructions. Thanks to this book, you can arm yourself with plenty of helpful information.

No, it is not an exhaustive compendium on every possible contingency, a ''how to specifically do everything'' book. Face it---no book CAN offer personalized instructions on how to proceed with YOUR particular divorce.

But I can honestly say this: As a twice-divorced person who accidentally happened to follow some of the instructions [my divorces occured before the book was written] I can say the instructions are helpful. And after reading the book recently, I wish it had been available back then so I could have followed ALL the instructions and made these trying events a lot LESS trying.

If you're getting a divorce, by all means get a good lawyer if you can't resolve things amicably. But also be sure to read this book. Knowledge is power, after all. And if you're fortunate enough to never divorce, remember your friends and family members who may benefit from 101 LITTLE INSTRUCTIONS. It would make a great gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars What everyone who wants a divorce should read--first!, October 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Little Instructions for Surviving Your Divorce: A No-Nonsense Guide to the Challenges at Hand (Rebuilding Books) (Paperback)
As a Divorce Master and Child Support Conference Officer for over five years, I have had the chance to see, meet--and experience--thousands of folks mired in the messy process of divorce. I only wish I could require them to read this book before getting into court. Ms Walton has been successful in crystalizing in 101 simple kernels of advice what those people need to know.

This is must reading for anyone contemplating jumping into the foreign world of the legal system because it puts in perspective the mysteries of the judicial process.

Most of those who have taken the plunge and made that fateful decision to get divorced have no concept of what is really going to happen and how it will affect them and their families. This book may be an eye opener because it forces you to see that divorce does not affect just you and your mate, but everyone around you. It also reminds you that this is only a short stage of your whole life. But most of all, it guides you--with some of the most useful, practical advice you will ever get.

I have seen it on a daily basis--people who have no clue about what is really going on. If only I could offer them advice--it would be this book. It is the most succinct, accurate and easy read on the subject I have ever seen. I highly recommend it for everyone--to read before you decide to take that drastic step of filing for divorce.
