This review is from: Little Jazz (Audio CD)
If you are into Roy, the chances are you have this already..if not, then you may want to splurge or shop around because this compilation is early stuff showcasing the early wonderful music
and trumpet of"Little Jazz"...the tracks include his early sides with Fletcher Henderson,Teddy Hill,Putney Dandridge, a Billie Holiday vocal and band performance,Mildred Bailey and Roy's 1st band..all from the 1935-1940 period..these mono recordings sound very good and the cd clocks in over an hour...
In the interim, there is Proper's wonderful 4 cd box set that sells for about $20.00 that has a few of the tracks here but if you are into the great band stars,Dizzy Goodman,Shaw,Satchmo,Krupa then Roy is up your alley because not only was he an influence on jazz but played with many "names" and certainly was a crucial part in the evolution of the trumpet in jazz and his emotive style was a link between Satchmo to Dizzy and the newer players.
He never got the attention he deserved it seems, and remains an unsung hero but a legend nonetheless recognized as such by jazz.
