Book Description

September 7, 2007
Twenty six chapters and each is a stand-alone unit on California history. The chapters take the reader down the Old Plank Road that crossed the shifting sands of Imperial County; and then does a trip over the Old Ridge Route of the Grapevine. There is the story of Ole Hanson, who envisioned a community where every home had a view of the ocean. The community is now called "San Clemente". The author recounts the second worst disaster to every strike California, and that was the failure of the St. Francis dam that caused the death of 450 people when it inundated Santa Paula and surrounding ranches and communities. Readers will get a wide education on California topics in Pryor's latest book, "More Little Known Tales in California History."

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

About the Author After working as a writer for a wire service, then a daily newspaper, and finally for California Farmer Magazine (for 27 years) Alton was the victim of an economic cutback. The magazine was sold and the new owners used only freelance writers. Pryor worked at freelance writing for a number of years, but found it unsatisfying. He did gain a love for California and western history however by researching and selling ten historical articles to a southern California Magazine. While researching, he found other stories that fascinated him, but didn t fit the magazine he was then freelancing for. He started a collection of historical stories. One day, while pacing the floor, wondering what to do next, his son, Scott, said, Dad, you know how to write, why don t you write a book? Alton s thoughts immediately jumped to his collection of historical articles. With more research, he put together 41 of these stories and they were the foundation for his first book, Little Known Tales in California History. That book has now sold more than 80,000 copies.
