She received her B.A. in Wellness and the Healing Arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is passionate about yoga, the arts, and the benefits of a holistic lifestyle. Maryellen is also the founder of Hip Healthy and Holistic, an initiative committed to promoting wellness, literacy and creativity. She currently lives in Massachusetts with her husband, son, and the family dog, Lola. As a teacher whose career began in early childhood education, I would highly recommend the Little Lotus. The story of the Little Lotus incorporates a variety of essential elements necessary when introducing or reinforcing health and wellness concepts to children. In order for children to make connections and apply meaning to such vital information, these essential elements are imperative. The essential elements in the Little Lotus include it being engaging, entertaining, enjoyable, enlightening, and everlasting. A story that can be read over and over again!

This book speaks directly to the heart and mind of a person. It is so cleverly written and engages both child and adult with lessons never forgotten. The illustrations are beautifully simple and you can not help but smile when you read word after word of wisdom. The author clearly has insight into what creates wellness. Being able to communicate this through story telling is an art that she has mastered. If this book was read to me as a child, it would be on my "never forget" list. It is on my "definitely recommend" list! I loved it and so did the kids.
