Book Description

July 31, 2007 Little Lulu (Book 16)
A classic contribution to American popular culture, Little Lulu is the ultimate all-ages comic! The humor is quick-witted and fresh, the characters are unique and delightful, and the art is simply out of this world. Join Lulu, Tubby, Annie, Iggy and all the rest of the troublemaking gang as they get themselves into some seriously silly situations. Lulu outwits the clubhouse boys, tells tales of the wicked Witch Hazel, and even solves a few mysteries with help from The Spider (a.k.a. Tubby) in this fun-filled volume. John Stanley and Irving Tripp were master craftsmen of comedy and the world they brought to life is timeless. Adults and children alike are sure to love these hilarious stories of one clever little girl and her legion of lovable pals.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Although she debuted in the Saturday Evening Post, Little Lulu vaulted to the pinnacle of cartoon eminence in comic books. She hit the ground running and never really faltered as long as Stanley and Tripp had charge of Marge's Little Lulu (the comic book's full name, acknowledging Lulu's creator, Marge Buell). Some of her and leading-man Tubby's adventures were better than others, to be sure, and this volume collecting MLL issues 69 through 74 confirms that she could be absolute gold for long stretches. These stories are consistently more inspired, busier, and wackier, and their dialogue winks more at older siblings and parents (without the slightest lewdness; this is 1950s kid stuff, after all). They're chock-full of shocking (and risible) disclosures: Tubby's dad has only one good spanking per diem in him, rich-kid Wilbur Van Snobbe's mom adores modern art, Tubby's fiddle summons elephants, Fairyland has gone all modern and philanthropic (but you still can't get there on the bus). As always, revenge powers many a plot, often rebounding on its initiator and then some; in "Three Fathers," Wilbur gets back at Tubby and his club mates but lives to regret bringing pesky littler kid Alvin into the scheme. This is the best volume yet in the complete Little Lulu project. Olson, Ray

5.0 out of 5 stars Tubby and the space men, November 25, 2007

This review is from: Little Lulu Volume 16: A Handy Kid (v. 1) (Paperback)
The fun continues with boys vs. girls, Tubby's gang vs. the the West Side guys, Tubby aka The Spider vs. Lulu's pop, Lulu vs. Witch Hazel, and so on. This volume is special for the story "The Little Men," marking the debut of the miniature space men in a flying saucer who show up in Tubby's bedroom.

I haven't been a kid for many years, but I still love the Little Lulu comics written by John Stanley. They are very funny and imaginative, although they portray a childhood that no longer exists (if it ever did).

Since Amazon doesn't have this volume in stock, I hope they won't mind if I mention that there are still some places that have new copies and are selling it at their regular price. Just Google for "little lulu a handy kid" and you should find them. I recently purchased a copy for $8.75 from ScifiGenre. Brand new, and very fast service. I ordered on 11/03/09, and received it on 11/05.
