4.0 out of 5 stars Little Rocker
We bought this guitar for our 6 year old and he really loves it. The strings can be tuned like an actual guitar and it can be plugged into an amp for louder volume!! I'm hoping it will hold up and he can enjoy it for a long time - or atleast until he advances to a real electric guitar. So far so good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good for playing rock star, not for lessons
I bought this guitar for my son who is just starting to take lessons. This is NOT a good guitar for that purpose. You can barely tune the guitar strings when they are open and even if you do, they play the wrong notes. There's another review for this product saying the same thing. They were right, shame that post was after I had already bought this.

However,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Fo Sho, January 7, 2009

This review got stuck on fives stars for some reason, but its more like a 2.
Buy a Squire Mini Strat instead.

I've played guitar for over 10 years and own and handful. I bought this for my 8 yr old niece for Xmas when it was on sale for under $50. I figured I'll unbox it first and if it sucks real bad I won't give it to her. Well to my surprise I think its quality enough to learn the basics.

To start off, the major problem with this guitar is intonation - meaning, after you tune it, its sounds out of tune when you play different chords. And its not that bad, just a little off, so really its only an annoyance to those who've played a guitar with proper setup.

On the positive side, all the notes play clearly up the neck - no dead spots. The action is low, so its easy to press the strings down. The built in speaker is loud enough and not annoying. The battery life is good. Most importantly, the guitar is a prefect size for young hands.

Anyway, my niece has wanted a guitar for a little while. Day one I taught her how to press strings down to play notes. Next lesson was how to use a pick. After that I taught her a few chords that only require one string to be depressed.

So this guitar can be used to learn the very basics - picking and pressing notes. But as soon as chords are introduced it sounds like garbage. I'd say if they keep at it, and you see potential, you should buy something else immediately.

I had her parents purchase a squire mini strat after 2 weeks.

However, if you just want to buy this for your kid to pretend that they are a rock star, then it's fine and would warrant a 4 star review. Especially if you can pick it up on Amazon's Gold Box Clearance (under $30). The other review didn't like the amp. The amp works fine but I'd bet a kid could blow it out if they tried.

But as this item is not being sold as a toy and it's not a good guitar, it gets 1 star from me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not tune., December 11, 2008

I rate this as just a toy that shouldn't be expected to function as a proper guitar. It's very difficult to tune when the strings are open. If you do manage to get them in the range of proper tuning, when you hit the strings, they play the wrong notes. It's has to be the poor construction. The speaker on it is terrible. Hooked up to an amp, the sound is better but it doesn't really matter since you cannot tune it properly.

This is simply unsuitable for anybody to learn to play on. Even a child. It's just a toy to be used for mindless strumming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect For My 5 Year Old, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Little Lyon Electric Guitar - Zebra Print (Electronics)
I bought this guitar for my 5 year old son's birthday. He loved it!!!! It looks like a real electric guitar and is made very well. As soon as he opened it he said, "I'm a ROCK STAR!" It's not too loud which is great because it doesn't get annoying. With the built in amp, he can freely move around the house! I would highly recommend this item!

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't hold a tune., February 19, 2011

I bought this for my 5 year old daughter. I wasn't expecting much for 50 bucks but I thought it would be at least tourist trap guitar playable. My daughter became so frustrated with it she calls it the junk guitar. There isn't anything about this chunk of junk I can say that is positive. The frets are course and break the strings, the keys are loose and won't hold a tune. The action is so high off the neck I could drive a car through it. The built in amp sounds better off. Don't buy this unless you just want a fake little guitar for show. Even then, you can do better.

2.0 out of 5 stars for picking only, December 17, 2009

This review is from: Little Lyon Electric Guitar - Zebra Print (Electronics)
I have given up trying to tune my Little Lyon Zebra print guitar. I've been playing 30+ years and wanted to get my children a guitar they could man handle as a full size is difficult at their age.

The Lyon looks super cool, and I love the built in amp/speaker. It is well built, the tuners are well made. Just can't play a cord on the top 3 strings. I tried, my brother (45yrs guitar playing) tried. We put new strings on. Tried adjusting the non adjustable neck-nothing worked.

This seems to be the nature of all 1/2 to 3/4 guitars. So think of this as a music toy, not a guitar for beginners. The only thing you can do with it is pick.

Great product! I got it on sale for $30, well worth it. Nice weight and loud enough without being annoying. I would definitely by it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok for a toy, June 11, 2009

We bought this for a Christmas gift this past year and it's ok especially since we got it really cheap. The sound isn't great on it but it looks cool enough that a 3 year old doesn't care. If this were for a kid 5 or older I would pass on it as they will actually care what the sound is like and they will probably stop playing it after 1 or 2 times. We only bought it so that our daughter could pretend she was a rockstar and would have something to play while her siblings played on their own guitars.

3.0 out of 5 stars great idea but not what loud enough, January 27, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Little Lyon Electric Guitar - Zebra Print (Electronics)
I purchased this guitar for my daughter for Christmas. We both loved the idea. She really wanted an electric guitar. I wanted an instument that didn't blow the house out with the sound. Well, it didn't even come close to the "right" sound. You really can't hear it with the amp on. I suspect she'll soon be asking for an amp so she can hear it the "right" way.
I gave it three stars because she really loves the guitar. Her brother taught her a few chords. So, she feels like she's rocking out.
Paying suggested retail is discouraged. But, if you get a deal and your little one wants an electric guitar - this is a decent choice.
