Pineapple Theif - Depressing Yet Excellent Release, June 1, 2010
Pineapple Thief are a band that has improved with each successive release. "Little Man" from 2008 continues in a style similar to Radiohead meets Porcupine Tree, but the band also continue to forge their own direction as well. This is not uplifting music, but rather intense and depressing. I am told that the concept of the album was based on the death of band leader Bruce Sword's child at birth a few years ago. If this is indeed the case it makes the material here that much more poignant. The album is moody and dark although it also rocks quite heavily in spots. The band continues to use interesting electronics and keyboards to spice up the material. The original albums that the band did for the Cyclops label all had rather muddy sound, but this is improved greatly on the re-master. Fans of Radiohead and / or Porcupine Tree should find a lot to enjoy from this underappreciated outfit.

I'll hold you tight, every night and I'll never let you out of sight, October 29, 2008
This review is from: Little Man (Audio CD)
When I first heard the name Pineapple Thief, I thought it was an interesting name, so I decided to download the album on a whim. It took a while to fully appreciate the CD but after a few listens I can say this this CD is one of the saddest but most beautiful that I have ever heard. The concept of the album is about how the singer of the band lost his child at birth and a lot of it touches a lot of issues while pulling on your heart strings at the same time. I never realized how painful it must be to lose a child soon after birth but this album shows that it has got to be one of the most painful experiences a person can encounter. If you as the listener are looking for heavy songs or technical solos look elsewhere. If you are looking for a good CD that is musically driven, features lush textures, some fragile vocals, and some surprises in between, look no further than Pineapple Thief's Little Man. Some of the stand out tracks are "Dead In The Water," "God Bless The Child," "Boxing Day," "Little Man," "Run A Mile," and "Snowdrops."

Rest in peace Little Man, February 16, 2008
This review is from: Little Man (Audio CD)
I have mentioned in another review of a Pineapple Thief Album that it would be interesting if Bruce Soord did a solo album. I cannot understand why "Little Man" wasn't that album. I am led to believe that "Little Man" is totally dedicated to the loss of Bruce and partners first child, but having recently just heard one of the Thiefs Podcasts, I was made aware that Bruce recently became a father. All Pineapple Thief CDs are in the sombre and depressing (But also beautiful and harmonious mind you) vein, and this release follows suit. You can really feel the pain and suffering. "Snowdrops" is an absolutely beautiful song and will have you reaching for the Kleenex tissues, as will the title track "Little Man". There is a noticeable increase in special effects sounds coming into the Thief Sound. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. It is the heavier tracks though that did not impress me (i.e. "Run a mile" and "God bless the Children"). Pineapple Thief are one of those bands that deserve so much more but are sadly overlooked, but as as also mentioned on the Podcast, there is an increasing fan-base building, and rightfully so.
