This was the first animated version of the Little Mermaid that I had ever seen. Shown on tv around the holidays, I absolutely loved it as a child. It sticks to the original tale rather than adding cutsie characters and changing the ending. The true meaning and messages behind the story are in tact.

The animation is quite beautiful and it still remains my favorite telling to this day. I would recommend it to everyone.

When I was young (I'm now 40), this aired every year on TV along with the Selfish Giant and the Happy Prince. They all broke my heart and made me bawl my eyes out every time, but I wouldn't miss them for anything. Then they stopped showing them. When they finally came out on video, I was overjoyed.

The artwork of this version of Little Mermaid is simple compared to what people expect of animated stories today but that just allows the poignancy of the story itself to come through. This is the story as it should be seen, as it was originally written, in all its bittersweetness. Thirty plus years after this version was produced, it still has the power to reduce me to tears.
