Book Description

Adelaide Bruce was just a girl in braids when her brother's best friend, Naval Captain Lord Drayton, left for war. Now, five years later, Lord Drayton has returned to London with hideous battle scars that have made him a social pariah. Adelaide doesn't see Roan's wounds, but rather the man she has always secretly loved. Although she has been courted by a handsome lord with marriage on his mind, it is Roan she secretly desires.

Roan is stunned when he is reacquainted with Addy Bruce. In the years that have passed, Addy has grown into a true beauty and the toast of the ton. He is not sure which surprises him more—her transformation, or the fact she is the only woman who treats him as though his scars do not exist. When Roan learns of Addy’s engagement to a rival, he must move fast…or lose her forever.

Please note: LITTLE MISS INDEPENDENT is a short novella (9,700 words) that was originally published in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF REGENCY ROMANCE. The story is a sweet romance (no sex).

2.0 out of 5 stars Good but EXTREMELY short (Not worth paying for) May 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I knew this would be a short story, but it only took me about 20 minutes to read. I prefer a story to have a little more character development before the ending. It has great potential to be a really good story if it would be expanded upon.

A very very very high 3 1/2 STARS

I am a very very big fan of Julie Templeton and love her work. I like this book; it was very sweet but it didn't feel like her best. The story is about Roan and Addy. Roan has return from the war with battle scars to his neck, cheeks and hands caused by fire. The very once handsome Roan isn't the talk of the town anymore because of this, as everyone looks at him now as a monster. He is also Addy's brother best friend. Addy for me was lovable she was very young at the age of 18. Although young, she knows what she wants and goes after it and it is Roan. Roan, even with the battle scares was still sexy and seems handsome to me. Both characters mesh well.

Again, I liked it, it was a quick, light, sweet and cute, but I personally believe it isn't the author's best. I love the author for her hot steamy love making, but they say never assume, but I will assume there was no steamy love making because Addy was so young, but without all that I would still encourage the read to readers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad May 15, 2012

Addy has loved Roan since she was a young girl, she now wishes to prove to him when he comes back as a war hero whose visage has changed because of the war. I loved their interactions with each other. It was refreshing to see the heroine go after what she wants. Roan being the damaged hero cannot believe that Addy who is beautiful and of marriageable age would want him. The story had a lot of angst and jealousy which I loved and thought helped move the story along to what one wishes the obvious conclusion to be.

I could not put this short read down and read it quite quickly. I liked it, until the end which I felt left too much unsaid and too much not done. I found myself wishing that there was more to the story. This is the only reason I am giving this story a Rose in Bloom rating.

This book had so much potential that I felt it wasn't tapped in such a short read. I love Julia Templeton and I did like the book. But by the end of the book I felt that something was missing, that more could have been said. The story though is a good one. I think some would like it as is. I guess I just expected a bit more. But...for a short read, sometimes this is how it is done. It has HEA, which pleased me, I just felt we needed more to get to know more about the characters.

Other Notes: Please note: LITTLE MISS INDEPENDENT is a short novella that was originally published in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF REGENCY ROMANCE.

2.0 out of 5 stars Way to fast July 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story had huge potential but it went way too fast. I love to read short historical romances and I have read hundreds. Some authors are able to tell a complete story in just a few pages. Unfortunately this is not one of those stories. There was very little background, almost no romance at all, no real conflict and it moved just way too fast. The only good I have to say about this book is thank goodness it was free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story but too short! July 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Delightful little short romance but yes it was too short! I'm not saying that because of paying for a short story (okay I got it for free), I'm saying it because I would have liked more - the potential is there for a much longer story. It was well written and heart warming. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
N.B. for those who left low ratings because it was short - try checking the length of the book before you buy! Even if there is no mention of the number of pages there is always a download size.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great short story July 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first novel I read from this author and I have to say that for a short story it was great. She kept the story short but interesting. There was a little but of everything, The background, the current situation, a bit of angst and jealousy. Romantic no doubt and highly entertaining. If you are into short and juicy srtories, tyo will like this.

3.0 out of 5 stars This had me wishing there was more! June 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this story if it wasn't for the drastic ending. It left me feeling deprived, especially after the sensual realizations of their attraction for one another. Roan's growing admiration of the now mature Addy is played so perfectly in this story, and then BAM! It's over. He's older, world-wise, so respectful of her and fiercely attracted to her...not to mention her older brother's trusted friend and someone who seems to have passions running deep...and so does she! The romantic possibilities between them are tangible and yet we're given nothing in the way of a taste, despite the delicious build-up. This fade-to-black was painful, leaving a bad taste in my mouth for reading anything else by this author.

I just think about what could've been, had we been given one more chapter and the passion they could've realized given their history - such a let down for an otherwise excellent story! I give it 3 stars for that reason.

2.0 out of 5 stars One dimensional but a good life lesson. July 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very quick read, but I did like that the heroine was not flighty and was steadfast in her love and loyalty. I knew going in that the story would be very short, so no complaints there. However, I only give 2 stars because it is next to impossible to produce a 5 star rating with such a short story. No time for real character development or plot. It was a good free book. I am willing to chance buying a book written by this author.
