Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1–A picture book about the benefits of sharing an indulgence. Little Mouse finds a giant chocolate-chip, raspberry-cream cupcake, but it's too big for him to carry. He enlists the help of a few of his sweet-toothed friends, each of whom asks for a taste. Bird takes a nibble from the top, while Frog, Mole, Snail, Chipmunk, and Possum sink their paws into overflowing amounts of cake and icing. After slurping and chomping down their share, the friends gather around to peek inside at what appears to be an empty cupcake liner. Readers will be surprised to discover what is left and where it goes. Children will like the predictable rhythm, the rhyme on the last page, and the sound effects they are prompted to make throughout the book. Watercolor, pencil, and graphite ink illustrations and large brown text appear against a soft white background. The cheerfulness of this story extends to the jacket flap and endpapers. Sure to be a storytime favorite.–Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist

Little Mouse is hurrying about when he spots a chocolate-chip, raspberry-cream cupcake. But the cupcake is twice his size, and he has no idea how to get it home. Bird is asked to help, but that consists of his taking a big bite. Frog gets a taste as well. Mole says it’s too big to go through his tunnel but takes his chunk. Then all the other animals ask for a taste, and Mouse kindly gives in. Even preschoolers will see what’s coming next. The now considerably reduced cupcake is so small that “It’s just the right size to carry . . . in my tummy!” The story is plain and simple, but Barton’s whimsical artwork is the frosting on the cake. Set against a vanilla-white background, the only things in the pictures are the animals and one luscious cupcake. The purity and focus of the art is a good match with the simple story line that gets a boost in the climactic spread, where the animals devour the cupcake with vigor. Little Mouse and the Big Cupcake is an excellent choice for groups. It's large format and clear distinct illustrations make it a natural for story time. Who doesn't like a book about cupcakes? This one tells the story of Little Mouse who has the good fortune to run upon a Chocolate Chip Raspberry Cream cupcake. The only problem is it's too heavy! There's no way he's going to be able to get it home. When Mouse asks all the other animals if they will help, they ask him if they can have a bite! What's really great about this book is the kindness Mouse exhibits. He never hesitates in sharing his cupcake, even though the animals aren't able to help him. It's a great message that any young preschooler can stand to hear repeated as often as possible!

This is a simple story that's not overly long. There are plenty of opportunities for the story reader to have fun with the audience. Some of these animals take great big noisy bites, so ham it up and have some fun! The kids will too. The ending will cause many to worry that Mouse is never going to get his share, but never fear- he gets his bite - and even better, a big bunch of new friends. Don't miss this endearing story, perfect for any preschooler. Recommended.

Everyone loves cupcakes - even Little Mouse! But it's too big for him to carry. His friends can't carry it either, but ask to take little bites, which turn out to be BIG bites. By the end the cupcake has become a small piece that's actually just the right size for Little Mouse. Mouse's generosity is endearing and leads to a happy ending with new friends. Best of all, th eillustrations are large, clear, and very cute - perfect for reading to a group of children. I definitely recommend this book.

This story reminds me of the old Little Red Hen story, only in reverse. Everyone helps to eat to get the cupcake to the size the mouse can handle it. Very cute idea with easy to read text, large print, and simple illustrations that are beautifully colored with watercolors and color pencil. I had some 3rd graders read the book and give an opinion - they thought it was very cute and that K-2 would really like the story.

He asked many animals for help but it seems none could help because they to were also small. However, mouse being a kind mouse shares the cupcake. In the end, mouse makes several friends as well as gets a piece of the cupcake too.
