A fun simple Classic,

This review is from: Little Nemo: The Dream Master (Video Game)
Little Nemo came out at a time when the NES was it's hottest, along with a young Capcom (who had already had success with the Megaman franchise as well as a number of Disney Titles).
The story behind Little Nemo is that Nemo is on an adventure through slumberland. With eight levels each one getting progressivly harder. Nemo is armed with Candy which can stun his foes and get certain animals on his side. From the Frog who increases his jumping ability to the Gorilla who is a powerhouse the game featured many things. Within each level (outside of the last) you had to gather a set # of keys in order to escape the level. In the final level Nemo, now armed with the Kings magic septer must square off against the Nightmare king and his villians. This game is a fun classic that did suffer a little from an insane difficulty, especially in level 3 where your on a speeding train. However if you are an NES fan to fanatic than this is definetly a must own title.

I just realized that this is a CAPCOM game. I was like whoa...that makes sense. It has the Mega Man feel to it. Okay, this game IMO (In My Opinion) has medium difficulty. I wish I could say easy, but it is not. The first level is the easiest. I guess it's suppose to parallel the movie Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland and has a series of books as well. In fact the intermissions of Nemo being yelled at by his mom don't really make sense to me, but I am glad that CAPCOM picked it up. You have to collect keys to get through the door at the end of the level. If you do not have enough...then you just back track trying to find that last key. The first level is straight forward. The second level starts to have hiding spots that you have to search out. So they make use of their large environment. You use candy to give to certain animals so you can jump into their mouths and use that animals abilities. I guess the candy has sedatives in it that after you feed them 3 they fall asleep and no longer hurt you when you touch them and hop right in. The candy when thrown at an enemy that you can't use will be frozen for several seconds, but I found this to make it harder to jump over them. Later on in the game you will receive a scepter that is called a morning glory and a beam function. You hold down the shoot button and charge the Morning Glory. This game takes practice to get use, but it is a cute game. I loved playing it back in 1990 and I love playing it now.
-Thanks

Dream Master is a basic platformer game with it's own little twist. There are 8 levels of play. 7 levels require you to get keys to unlock the door at the end of the level. You must explore the whole levels to find all the keys. To get some keys, you have to feed various animals candy to put them into a dream state. Afterwards, you can ride them. You can ride the frog, the gorilla, the lizard, the bee, the mouse, and more to get all the keys. The game gets pretty challenging as you progress. I have a lot of problems in the 3rd level because of the way it moves. All the stages of the game very well represent all 8 dreams and nightmares Little Nemo has straight from the movie. You have the mushroom forest, the underwater world, Nemo's house, the train level, and more. In the 8th level, you get the dream staff where you can shoot laser balls up at a 45 degree angle built for the boss battles in level 8 where you see the Nightmare.
The overall game and design is great and very well done. Many Capcom games do very well with Disney games and were all mostly the quality of Mega Man games. So, it is fair to expect a great game. My only complaint in this game is that it is a little too hard for the audience it is directed to. I usually use Game Genie on 2 or 3 levels and go back to normal gameplay. The controls are very good and responsive and the same for all the animals you get to ride. The music is all really good and about as catchy as the music from Mega Man or Duck Tales. The bottom line is that this game is very good, just prepare for a very difficult game after the 2nd level.

This one was just a fun, innovative platformer coming out toward the end of the NES's lifespan. Not every creature you meet is a foe; some can be persuaded to help you, granting you the additional abilities you'll need to beat the levels. You must learn the abilities of your various animal friends, as most levels are impossible to conquer playing solely as Nemo. The graphics are decent for nearly 20 years past, but most importantly they are bright, fun, and convery the dreamlike mood of the game. The music falls in the same boat. It's dated, but still fun and completely appropriate.
My sole complaint is that the challenge is somewhat uneven. The bulk of the game is fairly easy, sometimes tricky until you know what to do, but entirely manageable. However, there are some areas toward the end of the game that have a substantial difficulty hike. The City in the Clouds, for example, is a good deal harder than the rest of the game, and it's toward the middle. However, I am ESPECIALLY referring to the flame-jet portion of the Nightmare World. That one screen is easily ten times as difficult as anything else in the game, including the substantial chunk of terrain that follows it. I lose more lives in this part than the rest of the game combined. A lot more. All in all, though, a great and somewhat-overlooked classic for a classic system. Any collector should have this in her library.
