Editorial Reviews

Review

"The story's chief virtue is its graceful, balletic prose... It's a provocative inversion of the classic bedtime story, and a solid first outing. Srinivasan's message is that night is a delightful place, and that's useful knowledge for small children." -- Publisher's Weekly

"A graceful bedtime story celebrates the beauty found in night... Hold on to Little Owl's tail feathers and soar." -- Kirkus Reviews

"This exceptional first book by Srinivasan, a talented illustrator... follows Little Owl during his nighttime explorations... this bedtime tale may even convert children who are afraid of the dark into adventuresome night owls" -New York Times Book Review

"This debut picture book gets it all just right. The story, while familiar, is executed deftly and with heart, and the crisp graphic elements of the artwork juxtapose well against the pretty prose." -Booklist Starred Review

"This is the most visually and verbally gorgeous picture book of the year... Simple, dazzling - and simply dazzling." -The Boston Globe

This book is a treasure!

Children will love the characters, the story and the breathtaking illustrations. The style is unlike anything else I've seen, yet it somehow feels familiar at the same time. The story is fun and accessible without being overly simple; there's no baby talk in this book. It's beautiful and poetic, and combined with those adorable animals makes for a unique and memorable reading experience with your child. Wait until you see the bats!

I don't know why we haven't seen any other books from this author before, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there are more to come. The children's book world needs more stuff like this!

I've already given several copies as gifts, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive -- from kids and parents alike. Everyone is captivated from the first page.

Trust me. Get this book. Get several copies. You'll thank me later.

This book is great! It is a beautiful, simple story that my 17 mo loves! The pictures are beautifully illustrated and the story is sweet. My favorite part of the book is the pictures. Each page has a dramatic picture that is captivating! My son keeps asking for me to read (and re-read!) this book, so I recommend you get it! I bought 11 extra Little Owl's Night books to give as presents for all of my nieces/nephews and friends with new babies or little kids!

This book is just so sweet and sublime. The illustrations are gorgeous. I love the nighttime-is-beautiful theme -- if my daughter ever feels afraid of the dark, I think this book will help. It's a whole new take on bedtime books. Wonderful! I hope Ms. Srinivasan comes out with more!

With its breathtaking, engaging illustrations and poetic language, Little Owl's Night is a treasured part of my 3 year old son's bedtime routine - soothing for him to hear, but also for me to read after a long day's work! Little Owl invites us into his enchanting forest with its wonderfully expressive nocturnal animals and their musical sounds, so that night begins to feel familiar and comforting. My son can be nervous about nighttime, so it warms my heart to hear him read along with me, "Mama, tell me again how night ends..." And he has not cared to memorize the lines of any other book! I have given Little Owl's Night as a baby gift many times over because I think every child could use a little help finding comfort in the dark, and every child could use a friend like Little Owl. :)

Beautiful and surprising illustrations--it's a treat to turn the page, both for my 2 year-old daughter and for me. Our daughter is just beginning to be afraid of the dark, but this book makes the nighttime inviting--it's bringing her around!

This book has been in our house for about 48 hours and it has already been read at least 15 times. The story is heartwarming and the illustrations are beautiful. My two year old loves identifying all of the different animals throughout the story. I can barely read the last page before he flips back to the beginning of the book crying out, `whooo, whoooo'.

This is the bedtime story we read to our 1 year old twins every night. The pictures are great. The story is not too long, but not too short. I like the variety of animals and the groups that we can count together if we want. It's a great book for bedtime because the story winds down at the end and ends with little owl being fast asleep.

The illustrations are gorgeous and also educational. The story line is sweet and after the first read, I asked my daughter to construct her own story. The pictures allowed her to be very imaginative. Only comment is that storyline in verse may have been perhaps more entertaining. For our kids this book is in the same league as Amelia Bedelia!
A good birthday gift for kids 3-5 years old
