Editorial Reviews

Review

"The story's chief virtue is its graceful, balletic prose... It's a provocative inversion of the classic bedtime story, and a solid first outing. Srinivasan's message is that night is a delightful place, and that's useful knowledge for small children." -- Publisher's Weekly

"A graceful bedtime story celebrates the beauty found in night... Hold on to Little Owl's tail feathers and soar." -- Kirkus Reviews

"This exceptional first book by Srinivasan, a talented illustrator... follows Little Owl during his nighttime explorations... this bedtime tale may even convert children who are afraid of the dark into adventuresome night owls" -New York Times Book Review

"This debut picture book gets it all just right. The story, while familiar, is executed deftly and with heart, and the crisp graphic elements of the artwork juxtapose well against the pretty prose." -Booklist Starred Review

"This is the most visually and verbally gorgeous picture book of the year... Simple, dazzling - and simply dazzling." -The Boston Globe

This book is a treasure!

Children will love the characters, the story and the breathtaking illustrations. The style is unlike anything else I've seen, yet it somehow feels familiar at the same time. The story is fun and accessible without being overly simple; there's no baby talk in this book. It's beautiful and poetic, and combined with those adorable animals makes for a unique and memorable reading experience with your child. Wait until you see the bats!

I don't know why we haven't seen any other books from this author before, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there are more to come. The children's book world needs more stuff like this!

I've already given several copies as gifts, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive -- from kids and parents alike. Everyone is captivated from the first page.

Trust me. Get this book. Get several copies. You'll thank me later.

This book is great! It is a beautiful, simple story that my 17 mo loves! The pictures are beautifully illustrated and the story is sweet. My favorite part of the book is the pictures. Each page has a dramatic picture that is captivating! My son keeps asking for me to read (and re-read!) this book, so I recommend you get it! I bought 11 extra Little Owl's Night books to give as presents for all of my nieces/nephews and friends with new babies or little kids!

This book is just so sweet and sublime. The illustrations are gorgeous. I love the nighttime-is-beautiful theme -- if my daughter ever feels afraid of the dark, I think this book will help. It's a whole new take on bedtime books. Wonderful! I hope Ms. Srinivasan comes out with more!

This is the bedtime story we read to our 1 year old twins every night. The pictures are great. The story is not too long, but not too short. I like the variety of animals and the groups that we can count together if we want. It's a great book for bedtime because the story winds down at the end and ends with little owl being fast asleep.

Beautiful and surprising illustrations--it's a treat to turn the page, both for my 2 year-old daughter and for me. Our daughter is just beginning to be afraid of the dark, but this book makes the nighttime inviting--it's bringing her around!

I started reading this book to my daughter when she was only about 8 weeks old and she absolutely loved it. She's 6.5 months now and we have read it almost every morning. No other book has captivated her like this one. She coos and oohs with wonderment at all the animal drawings. It's a fantastic book for young babies because not only does it have interesting high-contrast illustrations of big-eyed animals, but also the story has a really nice cadence to it when read aloud. It's about three times as long as most baby books, but she stays attentive through the end with this one because of the illustrations and rhythm. It also seems like it will last her into toddlerhood unlike most books. There's plenty for a toddler learning about new things and vocabulary to talk about. For example, there's a skunk that eats berries because it can find no snails, and the toddler can then point out the snails in the background that the skunk didn't see. I never heard of this book or author before receiving it as a gift and I'm so glad we did!

Our 22 month old daughter loves this book more than any other owl or moon themed book. She enjoys finding things on each page and watching the characters throughout. She is either exclaiming "Luna, luna!", pointing to the owl, or looking for the squirrel. Really great illustrations and nice, calm pacing. We are both artists, and it's my favorite to read and look at and we have an extensive library. Can't wait for more from this author.

My son and I just read this book for the first time last night at bedtime-We love it! He is a 2.5 year old nature lover - we live in the city so this sweet (and BEAUTIFULLY illustrated) book is perfect for his adoration of all things plant and animal- I especially love the ending about the moonflower and morning glories... so gentle and well written and the characters already feel like old friends.
