Editorial Reviews

Review

Ages 4-8 London provides background information on emperor penguins in this book written for younger children. Although this story chronicles the life of a typical emperor penguin, the bulk of the story focuses on the penguin s first five months. From crawling out of a cracked egg at father s feet and accepting food from a foraging mother penguin, to first steps and swimming in the ocean, the basic facts of a male young penguin s life are described. An author s note provides more facts which expand upon the text. Boldfaced and italicized words denote impending excitement or importance, drawing children further into the story. This is a basic story of first facts with a few challenging words for younger children. Color pictures carefully highlight and accentuate the text. With London s text and Olson s pictures, a child s knowledge of penguins will be enhanced. Dennis LeLoup, Librarian, Avon Intermediate School East and Avon Middle School South, Avon, Indiana. Recommended. --Library Media Connection, January/February Advanced Reviews

Depicting the Antarctic setting with luminous shades of violet and blue and ice-cracked textures, Julie Olson's artwork features a young penguin that is both realistic-looking and endearingly irresistible. Kids will be captivated by the book's sense of adventure and intrigued by the ways that these animals have adapted to their harsh environment. --SLJ Article, Explore the Animal Kingdom: Books for Reading Aloud

More About the Author

I was born in Maryland, the 6th of 9 (that's right, 9) kids. I had 6 brothers who loved to tease and 2 sisters who paved the way with good old mom and dad for us girls. But, I vowed to be different than the bunch. From my dad's nickname for me, Jujubee, to my love of the arts...I tried to stand out (as much as a short girl can do).

In 1994, I left my parents and 3 remaining siblings at home to attend Brigham Young University and to study illustration. In a family filled with doctors, lawyers, electrical engineers, teachers and statisticians...I was the odd man out. But I didn't care and neither did my family. They were brimming with support and encouragement. Even now they are some of my biggest fans (besides my wonderful husband).

In April 1998, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a BFA in Illustration and have been freelancing ever since. I'm enjoying it throughly and am glad to be realizing my dream of becoming a freelance illustrator. But I must admit to you my other passion...my kids. As crazy as it gets with 4 kids running around the studio, the kitchen, the yard, the grocery store (or wherever I happen to be), I love being a mom and love to share my life of art with them.

Now I am writing books as well as illustrating them. I couldn't ask for more. Share my love of books with me...check them out on Amazon.

"Little Penguin: The Emperor of Antarctica" is a wonderful book about the emperor penguins. The illustrations are colorful, not overly detailed but charming nonetheless. The story is told very well, not talking down to children. There are some areas that bring up questions but the author has put a section at the back of the book to help answer those questions (making Mom or Dad or whoever look really smart).

There is one section that has a leopard seal that could be a little scary for youngsters but everything turns out fine - danger averted.

If you or your children liked the movies Happy Feet or March of the Penguins, you should like this little gem of a book (or vice versa).

Little Penguin: The Emperor of Antarctica
Jonathan London, Julie Olson

I love penguins, so I was happy to be able to review this book. The cover to this book is so pretty and calming to look at.
It's likely to grab your child's attention.
This is a sweet book for both girls and boys.
While being pretty to look at this is also informative for both children and adults. It's a short story about a newborn
Emperor Penguin and his life. The information is presented in a story like way that is a quick but fun
read. I especially like the author's note at the end which
expounds on the facts about emperor penguins.

"Little Penguin: The Emperor of Antarctica" by Jonathan London is a beautifully illustrated work that gives children an overview of the emperor penguin's life cycle. Well written, the informative text is enhanced by the vibrantly colored and very charming artwork of Julie Olson.

I particularly liked the fact that Jonathan London did not "talk down" to children, but included facts such as crop "milk" and the danger of the leopard seal within the pages of "Little Penguin: The Emperor of Antarctica." The "Author's Note" which follows the text of the book is very important and, in conjunction with the main text, should be read to and shared with children.

Although this book is targeted for ages 6 and older, parents and grandparents may want to read "Little Penguin: The Emperor of Antarctica" to younger children. My three-year old grandson loves this book. "Little Penguin: The Emperor of Antarctica" would also be an excellent introduction to the movie "March of the Penguins."

Julie Olsen's illustrations dazzled me in this book! She portrays cute, scary and beautiful with her artwork that's sure to delight readers. The book features full page illustrations on most pages and that is my favorite part. I found the text to be lacking, however. For such an impressive story as the Emperor Penguin caring for its young, the text could have been better. I felt that exclamation marks were used excessively. The text is simply mediocre to me when juxtaposed to such incredible illustrations.

As a side note, there is a large illustration with a leopard seal depicted in the book as the predator of the Emperor Penguin. This part of the story may be frightening to some children. On the other hand, it may be exciting and fun to other young readers. Just wanted to let others know.

This is a great little story of an Emperor Penguin as a baby then growing up and ready to have babies of its own. I loved how it shared Mom and Dad's effort to feed the family and the Leopard seal also made an appearance. I would recommend for ages 4-8.

Nice balance of plotting with facts about emperor penguins. A little danger with a scary leopard seal is quickly averted. My almost 3 yr old daughter enjoys this book--easy on the eyes and easy for her to follow. This is a great intro for toddlers to the nonfiction animal genre.

My younger daughter loves penguins, so I thought she'd enjoy this book. And she does. The illustrations are adorable -- very cute and colorful, and nicely done. The story isn't as good. It's a little on the dull side. But my daughter didn't really care. She just enjoyed looking at the pictures of the cute animals.
