Book Description

Frank Waters Memorial Publication Series , No 3 January 1, 1998
Folktales. Mythology. With illustrations by Chester Scott. In LIFE WITH THE LITTLE PEOPLE, Robert Johnson Perry weaves history, traditional information, family stories and his own fiction to create a facinating look into the magical world of the Little People...Follow him into this world. You will be enthralled. (--Gayle Ross) After a career as a chemical engineer, Perry, a Chickasaw Indian, was able to devote his time and energy to writing, dedicating himself to recording many of the stories passed on to him by Native American elders from various tribes. These stories are both fantastical and entirely possible. It's not so much that 'little people' exist, writes Perry in his introduction, or even that herbs were used, it's that simple faith is enough for healing to occur. The book is a magical reading experience for any reader, or, as we Muskogeans say--'Felep ah gez oschee!'--they'll have a really good time. (--Will Hill, Kabitcha Feke Seko)

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This collection of Native American tales comes primarily from the Creek and Muskogean traditions. Collector/author Perry is a storyteller and a member of the Chickasaw Nation; illustrator Chester Scott is an elder of the Creek Nation. These stories are unusual in that they date back four generations to the Trail of Tears, thus documenting the disintegration of the Indian way of life in the face of Manifest Destiny. The Little People, whom Perry likens to leprechauns, fairies, or elves, are pranksters who help preserve the ancient culture, often by outwitting the white man. Maps, a glossary, a list of characteristics, and tribal history help the reader understand the human context of the tales. Grammatical errors, acceptable in the authentic voice of the storyteller, unfortunately also mar more formal parts of the book, but the unique perspective makes this a valuable addition to all Native American collections.?Katherine K. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!, November 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Life with the Little People (Frank Waters Memorial Publication Series , No 3) (Paperback)
I love the author's style of writing. The book contains the stories about the Little People, the Steel-lo-booch-go-gee that were told among generations. The author uses the storytelling device to present the stories. I was fascinated by the stories of the Little People and their connection to children and healing. I would highly recommend this book. I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life with the Little People, December 13, 2003
This review is from: Life with the Little People (Frank Waters Memorial Publication Series , No 3) (Paperback)
I have a published review that I would like to send to Amazon. It's longer than 1,000 words but from the Journal of Chickasaw History, Volume 5, No. 1 (1999)by Richard Green, editor. In addition there is a very new CD of the same title, which are stories read from the book. Various Indian People Publishing Co in Richardson, TX, phone number 1-800-776-0842. Retail $19.95.
