5.0 out of 5 stars Hearing is believing
Everything everyone is saying is true - this is great Southern Rock and no one has mastered it quite like they have since Skynyrd. I love Southern Rock but no one recently has really got it right. Some are too country, some just don't get it quite right, and some just suck. But these boys got it right beyond any expectations I had. Attitude, musical ability, drive,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that smokin' hot....
Not my favorite sort of music - thought the lyrics were juvenile, musicians obviously talented - may just need more experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!, August 18, 2010
By
WOW!!! I saw these guys live this summer in Minnesota. I never buy cds at the shows but this time I did. Not disappointed at all. Every song on this cd is catchy, not in a pop tune catchy way, in a good way. A little bit of country, a little bit of southern rock...even some heavy riffs once in a while. Good old authentic southern rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Premier Southern Rock Converts This Yankee Into a Believer, December 10, 2009
By
This review is from: Little Piece of Dixie (Audio CD)
As a coffee drinking elitist from Seattle I never thought, in my lifetime, that I would ever like any music considered "hillbilly" and/or "redneck." Give me my Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, the Wilson Sisters, and Chris Cornell and I'm happy; that WAS my old motto. Having first seen Blackberry Smoke open for ZZ Top in Grand Forks, ND last year and just purchased their newest CD I am proud to say that "Little Piece of Dixie" has turned me into a believe of Dixie rock.

They performed beautifully at the Chester Fritz Auditorium when I saw them and, after talking to the band after the show in the lobby (great guys BTW), I bought their CD and fell in love with the music. I have always been a fan of guitar rock, however, I think lyrics and themes can make or break the mixture. Normally, I cannot stand country as I personally find the overly-patriotic rhetoric cliche and nauseating, or the sad love things make me depressed. Not to mention a lot of southern Dixie rock and country try to pass themselves off as either pop rock or something more sophisticated and the music just gets lost in translation.

However, I have always loved bluegrass and Blackberry Smoke mixes the Dixie-style of music with decent guitar rock but doesn't try to pass themselves off as something else. In fact, the lyrics practically embrace the hillbilly stereotype which I give a lot of respect for. Songs like "Good One Coming On" talk of getting drunk, skinny dipping, and other acts of moral ambiguity... not exactly stuff you'll find in a My Chemical Romance album (unless razors or crying is involved). If this doesn't make any sense, think of it this way; would it be just as weird to country fans if Beyonce started singing "Freebird" with Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Regardless of my personal reasons for liking the music, these guys got the talent to make it. It has the sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd but just enough contemporary flair to make it unique in it's own way. My support goes out to these guys as I anxiously await their next CD and hope they go touring again. I will make it a point to hear them in concert should they insanely decide to grace my frigid state once again.

This review is from: Little Piece of Dixie (Audio CD)
This album is awesome from start to finish. If you are a music fan, regardless of your favorite genre, you need to buy this album. Guitar driven southern rock n roll at its best. Buy the album, check out a live show, you wont be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say Hello to the New face of Southern Rock, August 30, 2010

It's rare for me to see a New act come out that leaves you knowing in your heart they are gonna be Big!! Say hello to Blackberry Smoke and the New face of Southern Rock. These guys come out of the gates smoking and don't look back. I know the most popular tune here will be Good One comin' on but thats just the open door to the Best Southern rock disc I've ever heard. Charlie Starr is a star and leading a band thats restored my faith in good ole rock-n-roll with a country twist. Add parts of Mick from the Stones and throw in a part Hank and Ronnie Van Zandt and these guys will keep your foot tapping the floorboard. Standouts include Like I am, Up in smoke, Sanctified Woman, and maybe the best heartfelt tune I've heard in a long time with Prayer for the little man. Round this one out with the classic Freedom Song (One they dedicate to the troops in concert) and you've got the best Southern Rock disc to come out in decades. They will perform on 9-11 with Kid Rock with a salute to the troops and Highly recommend seeing them live along with checking out the back catalog on Amazon. Bottom Line is I'm sold on the band and look forward to a long long future from the Future of Southern Rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Country Rock Band, February 18, 2010
This review is from: Little Piece of Dixie (Audio CD)
this is a pretty rockin' band, which is i like in my country music. the only downside at all (and it is not that bad) is "up in smoke"'s guitar riff is almost identical to travis tritt's "honky tonk history". seriously, tritt could sue. that being said, it is my favorite song on the album. totally worth the listen.....check out flynnville train and the road hammers if you like these guys....

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the decade, August 9, 2010
This review is from: Little Piece of Dixie (Audio CD)
I am an old fart who lost interest in music as the majority of the releases isn't worth a dime. But Blackberry Smoke changed my entire attitude. Little Piece of Dixie is the best album I have listend to for years. I am so hooked on their songs that I can hardly remember to have been so in love with any other band for a very long time. When I saw them live in a club in Verviers (Belgium) I was knocked out. The audience went berserk and so did I. It was a memorable experience. As a music industry veteran I was lucky to have worked with people such as David Bowie, The Red Hot Chili Peppers or George Clinton. Blackberry Smoke are in the same league. I bet any money that this band will go through the roof. If not with this album then with the follow up. My advice is simple: Buy this record immediately and check out their tour schedule. Seeing is believing.I thank the lord for having sent us this band. Amen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Southern Rock at It's Best!, July 6, 2010

I went to see this band with a friend who has been a long time fan. I had heard Good One Coming on on CMT and loved it but nothing prepared me for the experience of seeing these guys live. They are an awesome band of great guys and I was rocking out all night (not a small feat for girl raised in the 70's)and immediately got this cd - not a stinker on it. This band is blazing a southern rock trail through America and Europe and their future looks very bright! Love you Charlie!
