Boards of Canada's cover band?,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Little Plastic Pilots (Audio CD)
Why oh why did you rip Boards of Canada off? "Love Song" is almost a carbon copy of BoC's "Pete Standing Alone". "A Sam is Born", "Lagunita Fog" and "Spring or Winter" are also near direct translations of BoC tracks. Some of the tracks also tend to be a bit monotonous. FYI, the beat in Lagunita Fog really pisses me off! Once you hear it, you'll know what I mean.
Having said all of that, I love this CD, and I'm listening to it right now. It's full of great soundscapes, such as in "There's a Shipwreck Down There". "Fighting Action Figures" is one of the coolest songs I've heard in a while. I would highly recommend this CD to those who enjoy Ulrich Schnauss and Boards of Canada, (so long as you don't mind the occasional copywright infringement). ;-)

Interesting side-project/Debut,

Weighing in at just over 40 minutes is Little Plastic Pilots, spawned by Los Angeles native Sam Nelson. Apparently a side project, as Mr. Nelson is a member of rock outfit "H is Orange," (which is intriguing in itself), this disc, while short, is multilayered in a similar fashion as Boards of Canada (Geoghaddi and earlier). According to their website, Boards of Canada is but one of many influences, but in my opinion, it is certainly their strongest.
At face value, some songs appear to be utter BoC rip-offs, and I've really attempted to look past these first impressions and delve deeper into the songs themselves. For what its worth, a lot of these songs would easily fit in a Boards of Canada disc. But when you think you have this disc pegged as a Boards of Canada rip-off, it makes a slight course alteration, and other influences make themselves present. I'm not going to bother listing these influences - you can make those judgements for yourself. And there concludes any references to Boards of Canada in this review. For the most part, this disc maintains its quality throughout, and the highlights are found at certain points of the disc, not necessarily whole songs themselves. The sweeping landscapes created within are engrossing, and I don't find any of the tracks are too long or montonous. Most of the songs are bass-driven, and a mixture of sound samples - bent, stretched, filtered - are used with the beat to carry you through these soundscapes. One complaint: at the end of song 9 (Fighting Action Figures), it just cuts off at its finish. I'm not sure if this was intended, but even a simple fade-out would've been more appropriate. Despite heavily-influenced songs, and some parts a little rough around the edges, this disc has left me salavating for more. Perhaps when Mr. Nelson finds more time, he can create more sounscapes like these. These 40 minutes, I hope, is only the tip of the Little Plastic Pilots' iceberg.
