Kindergarten-Grade 3-- First introduced in Little Polar Bear (1987) and Ahoy There, Little Polar Bear (1988, both North-South), the frisky cub, Lars, is now captured while searching for a playmate and is placed in an airplane cargo-hold full of animals destined for a zoo. He frees himself and the other animals, traveling back to his Arctic home with a walrus and a small brown bear. The would-be adventure story is so understated that little excitement is generated, and each event is described so briefly that the drama of Lars's capture, escape, and long trek home is downplayed. Instead, the emphasis is on friendship and cooperation, as each animal makes a special contribution to the journey's success. De Beer's subtle promotion of positive relations among races is marred by the bear's feeling that her brown color will make her unacceptable. The overall effect is gently didactic, but not overbearingly so. The large watercolors are appealing and certainly show more energy and emotion than the text. The animals' faces are expressive and slightly comical, and the little round bodies of the cubs are endearing. The size of the illustrations reflects the grandness of the events, and makes them particularly suited for group sharing. --Danita Nichols, New York Public Library

My boys love this book ~~ they both grin everytime I show them a page. Right now, my husband and I are on a polar bear kick since the boys both showed an interest in the polar bear at the local zoo.

Lars, a little polar bear, wants nothing more than to have a friend. He soon learns he has to be careful of what he wishes for! He gets kidnapped to be taken to a zoo and along the way, he meets a Walrus and Bea, a little brown bear. They escape to go home and Bea comes home with Lars.

It's a lovely little story with great detailed pictures. It's great to keep the kids' interest while reading ~~ and someday when my boys are older, it'll be a great book for them to learn how to read.

It's a cute addition for any library!

In this beautifully illustrated series about Lars, the Little Polar Bear, he finds a friend. In this edition, Lars meets Bea, a Brown Bear, and they have to find their way home after they escape from the cargo boxes that they were caught in. They stay behind to help a Walrus escape when no one else would. The moral in this story is one of differences. Although Bea and Lars are different in color, they are really quite the same since "Bears are Bears". All of these stories have a happy ending and they are great for reading outloud.

An adult might find the storylines a bit repetitive but my 3 year old loves all of the Lars books. We got her some at xmas and she was so pleased that we bought all the others for her birthday 5 months later and she wants them read to her over and over. She even 'reads' them to her younger brother!
