Tropical fun in the sun for My Little Pony, June 21, 2005

This review is from: My Little Pony Butterfly Island Adventure (Toy)
Butterfly Island is the magical home of the mysterious pegasus ponies. And the playset does indeed come with a pegasus--a baby pegasus! The downside about her is that Hasbro named her Honolu-loo. The upside about her is . . . everything else! Less gangly than the other babies, she'd be adorable even without wings. She has hearts and swirly designs molded on her face and legs, just like Star Catcher. Also, mine came WITHOUT the evil plastic hair thingie, so she actually has real curls instead of a weird bend in her mane! Yaaaay!
The playset itself is large, impressive, and filled with fun things to do. The ponies can ride up the rainbow on the flat "cloud", then surf down the waterfall on the other side. There is another surfboard built into "Dolphin Beach"--turn the wheel at the side of the beach and the surfboard will turn in circles as the dolphins "jump". Both the surfboards and the cloud have magnets built into them, under the plastic, to keep the ponies firmly anchored.
At the top of the rainbow / waterfall is a butterfly with long antennae, each supporting a pair of "wings." If you wind the knob on the butterfly's chest, they will turn in circles. Also, if you turn the knob and then press the heart-shaped button in front of the butterfly, they will turn on their own as a "tropical" version of the My Little Pony theme song plays. At first I was skeptical that a frail looking antenna could support a pony . . . but it does. (I only tried it a few times, though, so I don't know how it will hold up under continuous play.) I wouldn't leave the wings on an adult pony for very long, as they are a rather tight squeeze around their middle and might leave scrapes.
The base of the island is nicely molded with plants, textured sand, and seashells, as well as a path leading from the beach (where ponies can play with the ADORABLE beach accessories--a sandcastle mold, a sand castle that fits IN the sandcastle mold, a plastic bucket, and a plastic spade) to the Surf Shack, where ponies can gear up with a hula skirt or scuba gear.
The scuba gear is translucent blue and is THE CUTEST THING EVER. Just be careful not to lose the flippers, as they are a little loose on some G3s. The snorkle has an adustable strap so they can be worn by babies or adults.
Between the waterfall and the rainbow is the magnetically activated juice bar. Use a pony's hoof to activate it and watch the amount of "juice" in the cups lower! The cups also have translucent straws, which swivel. Too cute.
This is my favorite playset of the G3 line and I can't imagine any kid not loving it just as much. It's imaginative and fun, and even if mom gets tired of the music and "accidentally" loses the batteries there's still more than enough for kids to do. The baby pony is adorable, too.
One word of warning: Do NOT lose the square piece of plastic that fits over the "music" button. It is absolutely essential if you want the waterfall and rainbow to stay in place.

Pony fun, August 2, 2005

This my little pony item has indured hours of abuse and play from my 4 year old and my 2 year old. I love the storage area in the back, I keep all of the small parts I don't want my kids loosing in it at all times. It is like all the other pony items (the castle, the amusment park,) in the fact that it easly falls apart. The pices don't fit tight enough to keep them in place while little hands are brushing by them like the tree and the little turtle crossing and dolfin beach signs. The cute little tropical twist to the my little pony theam song is a delight and a nice break from the norm. The cute baby pony is so well made like Star Catcher. All in all I love this toy about as much as the castle and my kids get lots of fun out of it. Also I recomend you get the new treasure pony with dvd because it ties in the new butterfly island ponys with the regular ponys which made my daughter love it even more after seeing the ponys on tv at buterfly island.

My daughter loves this, December 2, 2005

It was not difficult to assemble. My daughter is five and the toy seems to be holding up well. It is good for hand-eye skills because the kid can change the ponies who fly on the ride (by unhooking them and then putting a new pony in place / I recommend baby ponies for this ride so the skin is not dented). It plays a cute tropical version of the MLP song. It came with a baby pegasus pony as well.
