Fun Readers for My Little Pony Fans,

This review is from: My Little Pony Phonics Fun (My First I Can Read) (Paperback)
My five-year-old loves anything involving My Little Pony. When I saw these readers, I knew that she would enjoy them. Since she does not like to read aloud yet, these colorful and fun books were an incentive for her.First, the good news.... Unlike similar products for Dora, Diego, and other characters, these really are 'Bob Book' level readers; each page has a sentence or two. Now the negatives.... My Little Pony names do not lend themselves to phonics readers (Sunny Daze, Sparkleworks, for example). Plus, while the text is very simple, there is not the type of phonics building that you will find in Hooked on Phonics or Bob books. In other words, these are fun additions to whatever reading program that you intend to use with your young MLP fan.

For the girl who can't get enough mlp..,
This review is from: My Little Pony Phonics Fun (My First I Can Read) (Paperback)
My daughter was thrilled to receive these because of the characters. They aren't really phonic readers, though, including a lot of sounds and combos we haven't covered yet. Many words more advanced that Bob books set 4, and there isn't much to the stories.

This entire package could have been made MUCH better. My daughter, a lover of My Little Pony, was completely bored with these books in about a week. Even the decodable phonics words weren't enough inspiration to keep her reading when confronted with far too many words she wasn't ready for, and the names! The pictures were a bit too close to sight-word clues, as well, which meant she didn't have to try to know what was going on. For a 'phonics' package, these books relied too much on the 'sight words' clues (guessing at story instead of READING). The books are tiny- more like what your kids bring home as freebies from public school than something you paid money for. Not sorry I bought them for her, but definitely not what they advertise themselves to be.

OK, but frustrating for beginning reader,

My daughter (almost 5) loves everything pink, and I thought this would be a good direction to go in as she was beginning to read. I first saw this in her preschool Scholastic flyer (at a higher price) so I thought that it would be a good buy.My daughter is able to sound out some words. She knows the sounds of all the letters, and she's done well in other beginning reader books. She's very patient. These books frustrated her, made her cry because she couldn't succeed even after reading the books over and over for days, and frankly have set back the phonics progress we had made previously. These books have very difficult words in them, not the least of which are the pony names. Here's a page out of BOOK ONE. "Hello, Sparkleworks! Sparleworks is my friend." Another one in the same book "Here is a pink pony. I like pink ponies! This pony is Skywishes." It doesn't get any better. A random page from Book nine "Let's pet the rabbit!" said Daisy Jo. Rainbow Dash bent down to say hello." I would skip this as a "My First I Can Read" as it is marketed, or as a phonics helper.

This was an awesome educational product. Since my daughter loves my little ponies and has poor reading skills she is now reading books due to this purchase. It isn't a video or listen and read CD deal. This is do it yourself and read it deal. I love it! The pictures in the book didn't tell her exactly what was going to happen or what was going on so it sort of forced her to learn about the pictures and who each character was. She learned to read them within a few weeks of studying. It was amazing and I highly recommand it.

Excellent short books for first time readers who are MLP fans. My 5 1/2 year old loves them! They are very light weight, what you would expect for soft cover books. Don't expect these to last forever, but that is to be expected, and will last as long as she will be needing them.

My daughter is now enthusiastic about reading,

My daughter is a huge My Little Ponies fan and has been playing with her ponies almost daily since she was three. Now that she's in kindergarten, she's been bringing home readers similar to these each day. She's enjoyed some of the stories, but wasn't as enthusiastic about reading as I'd hoped she would be. These My Little Pony books have changed everything. When we first received them, she begged me to open them, wanted to try to read them on her own, and would have read them all in one sitting if I'd let her. She's still excited about them, and likes to read them to me and to her ponies and stuffed animals. I agree that the pony names are not easy to sound out at first, but if your child is a fan, s/he'll learn them in no time. Because of these books, my daughter has become more willing to try to read other stories. Whatever flaws they may have (and I think they are minor) she's learned something very important from them--there are books out there for everyone, and reading them can be fun!

I got these for my little ones 5th Birthday. She already has several of the full version stories. She loves these, but I think they are pretty cheesy. Basically they just took artwork out of existing books and made shorter stories and used smaller words. So these are great starter books, but I wouldnt get them if you already have the full story books.
