4.0 out of 5 stars A Lesson For Young and Old, November 10, 2009
This review is from: The Little Pot (Hardcover)
A very colorful book that should keep childrens attention while reading. This is a nice story about trust and patience that is a parable for young and old. Everyone should come away from this book with the thought that i can be more and give more of my life to others. The little pot is a book we will read to our little ones and will always remember at the end that we are all a vessel waiting to be filled over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Pot by Dawn Stephens, September 1, 2010
This review is from: The Little Pot (Hardcover)
I am a children's picture book author also and wanted to do a review of Dawn's book, "The Little Pot". She and I formed a relationship through blogging as children's authors. When I found out about her book, I read the short preview and thought, "I would have loved to have written that!"

I'm also a potter and understand so much of where the book is coming from. It was a very thoughtful move not to put the potter's face in the illustrations. The hands are such an important part of the potter as he lovingly has already thought about the Little Pot and what his plans for it will be. The Little Pot is constantly guessing what it will be due to what it 'had become' by having differnt things put in it. How often do we think 'this is what God's plan for me' because of something that's taken place in our life? But God's plan for our purpose was in action long before we were being 'formed'.

From a potter's view...a potter will already know what they are going to create before sitting down to the pottery wheel. The potter has a plan for its creation and the plan includes it's use even before it is created. The pot goes through a process of drying to a point of being able to trim it. In this portion of the pot's creation, the outside of the pot is trimmed to 'reflect the inside'. I love that! I could go on about 'pottery', but this review is about Little Pot.

The patience of Little Pot is amazing. I remember as a young Christian being 'fixated' on specific things...mostly wanting to know what I was and was going to be; then wanting to get on with it! Little Pot has more patience than I did, but which I eventually learned to 'let grow and show'.

This book would be great for any child, women's conferences, Sunday School, visits to nursing homes, visits to hospitals, etc.

Dawn went through a time in her life recently where she went to the Potter (God) about herself and her purpose. After that time with 'Him', she ended up recently as the Principal of Central Christian Academy, Portsmouth, Virginia. All this took place 'after' she wrote "The Little Pot". This is where she has now been placed to be His 'fruit pot' amongst an ever-growing, ever-increasing population of children. How awesome is that??

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read with a great lesson, cute illustrations, May 11, 2011
This review is from: The Little Pot (Hardcover)
This is the story of a little pot, made with love by the potter, who has a purpose in mind for the pot. The pot holds several things for a short time. Each time, he becomes excited about his perceived purpose in life, and then disappointed when it's taken away. Still, the pot does it's best to trust the potter, and in the end, is quite pleased with his creator's plans for him.

This is obviously a parable illustrating how we are made by God to be His vessels, and that He has a special purpose in mind for each of us. The lesson is quite clearly portrayed, but in a very natural and enjoyable way. The illustrations are endearing and will help hold a child's attention. My daughters, ages 7, 5, and 3, all love the book, and it's an enjoyable book to read to them. I would highly recommend it.

The Little Pot
written and illustrated by Dawn Stephens
Most humans wonder what their purpose in life is. Many do not look to God for their answer and might never find an answer on their own.
In Dawn Stephen's, The Little Pot,' Little Pot waits patiently for its creator to let it know its purpose. This enthralling children's story shows its young readers that their purpose is in the loving and caring hands of God and they need not fear what lay ahead for God's plan holds the best outcome. This is a story for all ages.

My four year old grandson, Luke eagerly listened to the whole story. He loved that with each job Little Pot got made Little Pot more and more important. Luke said, "It was good that the Little Pot waited."

5.0 out of 5 stars A special book with a special purpose!, July 26, 2009
This review is from: The Little Pot (Hardcover)
We've all wondered at one time or another what our role in life was meant to be. If you're looking for a simple, yet wise tale to share with young readers about our roles and the importance of patience, then The Little Pot by debut author/ illustrator Dawn Stephens delivers.

In The Little Pot, a potter gently molds and shapes a new vessel and declares that he has important plans for his creation. "Little Pot, I have a very special plan for you." The little pot is excited and anxious and begins to wonder what its purpose will be. Will it be used to hold important documents? Will it be used to hold coins? The potter reassures the little pot that he's preparing it to be a very special pot. Though the pot doesn't fully understand, it waits patiently to find out its role. One sunny afternoon, the potter returns with a small bucket of soil, and a small green plant. For several weeks, the potter waters the plant and watches it grow. Finally, little pot is happy to be a flower pot. But when the flowers turn green, little pot becomes worried. Then he's reminded by the potter that it was not meant to be a paper pot, coin pot, or flower pot. Its purpose the whole time was to be a fruit pot! And, in the end, as little pot glances at its shiny red berries, he knows that fruit pots are the very best pots to be!

This is a wonderful book to remind young readers that just like the Little Pot, they were made for a very special purpose. It combines, faith and destiny and will reassure readers that we can't know everything NOW! Children will fall in love with the book as soon as they see the cover. Who can resist this fun and eye-catching pot with an adorable face? You'll feel Little Pot's emotions as he gradually comes to realize its creator knows best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Children's Classic for the 21st Century, November 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Little Pot (Hardcover)
The Little Pot is a awesome children's book with a very important message. I have four children, ages 3-17, and they have read (or been read) this book and they not only love it but each get the message from it personally. My little ones love to hear the story several times a day, and as with many childrens books, some are tiresome to reread....Not the Little Pot, every time it is read it is a joy and a blessing. I purchased 2 this Christmas for my kids and my niece, and I plan to buy a few more for friends and gifts throughout the new year. Awesome gift!
Dawn Stephens is also a very humble and gracious author who will stop what she is doing to personally sign your book, and take the time to meet your children. A wonderful Christian lady and example as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic and Engaging, May 21, 2010
This review is from: The Little Pot (Hardcover)
Once there was a potter who formed a little pot. A vessel. First he used it to hold letters, then changed his mind and used it to hold money, before changing his mind once again. Finally the little pot is used to hold a strawberry plant and bears fruit for the potter's breakfast.

The Little Pot is a charming parable-like children's picture book that gently teaches and encourages children to rest in God's hands no matter how He chooses to use them throughout their lives. Written from Little Pot's point of view, we journey with the humble little pot through its changes in purpose, through its uncertainties about its role in life, and its yearning to be used by the potter. Each time the potter chooses a new role for the Little Pot it rejoices, each resting time between roles is a time during which Little Pot needs to trust the potter and his purposes.

It is difficult to capture in words the appeal of The Little Pot. My children gather around and listen carefully each time I read the story. The repetition is appealing, as is the range of emotions Little Pot goes through, and The Little Pot appeals on many levels. My youngest children are happy to take the story at face value. My seven-year-old is twigging in to the underlying allegorical message, and I myself also appreciate the spiritual message to be found within its pages.

Stephens is not only author, but illustrator as well, and her digitally generated art is both warm and appealing, with Little Pot sporting sweetly anthropomorphic facial expressions and the potter being depicted as a fair of hands. The inherent spiritual lesson to be found in this hardcover make it an excellent choice for Sunday School classes or for children's lessons at church, as well as for reading together as a family.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book for children and adults to learn with, July 21, 2009
This review is from: The Little Pot (Hardcover)
"The Little Pot" is a gentle homily for children ages 4-8 about finding patience to uncover God's purpose for all creations, including the very special Little Pot. Each time the little pot is filled with something new (paper, coins, flowers, etc.), she thinks she has finally found "the very best pot to be!" But the Potter has a special plan and purpose for the Little Pot that only unfolds in time and stages, like stations of spiritual development. "The Little Pot" gradually learns to have patience and flexibility in accepting the role(s) which the Potter gives to her. It is a fine model for encouraging humility, acceptance, faith and belief. "The Little Pot" conveys its message beautifully through both the playfully displayed text and the whimsical illustrations. This is a wonderful book for children and adults to learn with.
