I purchased this 70th anniversary gift set in honor of St. Exupery, since I taught this book for years as a means of teaching allegory to high school students. However, I used the MUCH superior Katherine Woods translation.
This anniversary set is an insult to both St. Exupery and the Little Prince himself. I was excited that Viggo Mortensen had done the audio, but when I listened to and read the very first page, I closed up this set and will not even give it to a friend.
Howard hasn't just simplified the text, he has destroyed it. Substituting the word "excuse" for "reason" in the famous dedication to Leon Werth is appalling. And to change "primeval forest" (Woods) to "jungle" is ludicrous.
In addition, while Mortensen certainly has a great voice, his inflection is so flat that I can't imagine hearing the whole book read this way.
I am not just disappointed in this product; I'm also appalled that whoever chose this translation would give such little credit to the reader. Woods' translation is as close to the original French as possible.
I'll simply copy here some comments from a very astute person, Allie Jones, whose insight is spot on:
"Katherine Woods' simple and beautiful translation is the only one that does justice to The Little Prince. Published by Harcourt in 1943 and 1971, her translation is the essential --- the translation loved and quoted by English-speaking people around the world, even by members of English- and French-speaking Canadian Parliament! But hers is OUT OF PRINT, so snatch up used copies while you may!
WARNING: the "new translation" by Richard Howard purges meaning, and is not worth the money. It gives a falseness to one of the most sincere stories ever written.Read more ›

I just saw the original drawings at the Morgan Library and am appalled by the poor quality of the prints in the 70th Anniversary edition; so untrue to the delicate shadings of the original. The translation too is far from the quality of previous translations.

We really enjoyed the quality of the narration, simple telling of a beautiful story. HOWEVER...NO tracks to divide the story! IF you want (or have) to stop anywhere in the story, unless you simply pause and pick-up where you left off, you must start all over at the beginning. How on earth could the production team have overlooked this? SO disappointing to not be able to get to a section/chapter. Great for uninterrupted play but tough unless you have a dedicated player that can pick up where you left off.

Honestly, I love this book and have many variations (French, collectors items, etc). I got this version largely for the Audio. Great to listen on a long car ride (I travel back and forth between DE and DC weekly.) Audiobook is only 2h long and I ripped it to my iTunes collection. The book is beautiful - Has all of the classic watercolors in fantastic detail. A great addition to my collection.

Although I don't see this as a children's book, I do recommend it to those of us who want to be softly drawn into the life of life and its poignant irritations. The audio book was mesmerizing, so be prepared to become acutely aware of its presence in your ability to pay attention to other things. Simply put, my heart was touched by this story of this charming Little Prince and his Friend. My spirit was saddened by his fate, although I believe the author's intent was to leave us with a feeling of hope. A lovely combination is the book and the cd.

This is a very nice product. I had some difficulty with downloading it to my computer, but the publishers eventually sorted me out. The only other problem is that there are no breaks in the narration on the cd so one has to listen to the whole thing in one go. There are no chapters in other words. I would like to be able to listen in smaller chunks. The book is beautiful and the cd has the wonderful voice of Viggo Mortensen reading the book.

A perfect gift set for any Little Prince lover ! I have loved this story since I was a child. I bought this because my old copy was wearing thin. This is a cool set because it has the book and book on cd too! It has a very sturdy case to protect the book and cd from getting damaged .
