4.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as everyone says!!!!
Ok, first off...YES this is NOT perfect! But after reading it, I don't see how it only has 1 star!!!!

The story is about June, a candidate to be the next "Queen of Light." She's not very motivated, can be rather annoying at times, and doesn't think things through, but she's not that bad. She has a childhood friend Sejuru, for whose sake she decides she wants...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good enough
I didn't really like this book. The art is a bit messy, you can't really tell who's saying what, and the story is kind of confusing.I bought it
because I heard it was good but now I'm going to return it.It was kind of
bad.(I'm a girl who's 12.I pick the kid's review because it's easier.)

Ok, first off...YES this is NOT perfect! But after reading it, I don't see how it only has 1 star!!!!

The story is about June, a candidate to be the next "Queen of Light." She's not very motivated, can be rather annoying at times, and doesn't think things through, but she's not that bad. She has a childhood friend Sejuru, for whose sake she decides she wants to be queen. I guess the story will end up being about how she beats her rivals (such as Lucia) to become the Queen of Light. Parts were kind of confusing. Flashbacks cut in and out of the story in (what seemed to be) random moments. But if you take your time, it makes sense. It's true that at times it's hard to figure out WHO is talking, I'm not sure if this is due to the translation or if it has always been like that, but it can be a little distracting. However, that did NOT stop me from enjoying it, and if you read it more than once (which I always do, what's the point of buying something if you aren't going to read it a lot?) it makes more sense.

There are a LOT worse manga out there, which seem to be really popular. So I'd say if you want to read something fun, with BEAUTIFUL artwork (all of Yeon-Joo Kim's works are beautiful, and this is no exception) then give this a chance! I thought the references to some popular anime were really fun, too. (such as the Neon Genesis Evangelion reference....as a fellow EVA fan, it was quite amusing, there are other references as well, such as a Sailor Moon one)

I'm about to read volume 2, and maybe the story will never improve. Still, I found it fun. If nothing else, the art is gorgeous. It's not as good as Platina (another manhwa by Yeon-Joo Kim) but it's not that bad either, but it'll probably take a reread or two to really understand what was going on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Little Queen.., June 12, 2008
This review is from: Little Queen Volume 1 (Paperback)
In fact,I am a fan of Yeon Joo Kim and I read this book both
in Korean and English. When this book came out in English,
I was really interest and i bought this.
However, I was really surprised how the translation was HORRIBLE.
The translation didn't make any sense and it even made me angry.
I think that is why many people rated this book as a one star.
Actually, this book is one of the popular and famous manhwa in Korea
and a lot of people really like this book.
Althougt it didn't win, it was one of the candidate for best Korean
manhwa competition. Many people consider this book as a beautiful
artwork with a cute and beautiful story.
It is ture that even some of the Koreans said that
this book is hard to read or understnad, but many people
understood this book including me.
The way Yeon Joo Kim writes the story confused me when i was young, but
i can understand now as i get older.
If this book had a better translation, many people
will be amazed of this beautiful manhwa.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst Ever!, July 10, 2007

This book is rated, in my opinion, as a -5. Yeon Joo Kim is also the creator of the wonderful manhwa Platina! What happened with Little Queen, I don't know. I have read alot of manga in my life, this is by far the worst! All the other reviews are correct but I didn't listen and bought the book anyway.
WHY DIDN'T I LISTEN?! I was going to sell the book on amazon but I think $3 is a total rip off. Heck if it was FREE it would be a rip off! Don't buy it!
Buy PLATINA which is by the same person but it's the exact opposite,
IT'S GOOD!

1.0 out of 5 stars CANDIDATES FOR QUEEN, December 18, 2006
This review is from: Little Queen Volume 1 (Paperback)
The Rohini Royal Academy is a school best known because it singles out candidates that will become the "Queen of Light", a symbolic ruler that keeps the world in balance. There have been times in the past when the Queen had to fight against demons and other dark forces but that evil has been sealed, but things are about to change. The two most likely candidates to be Queen are June Narcieq and a beautiful girl named Lucia. Not only are they rivals for being Queen, they are also interested in the same guy, Sejuru, a classmate that June grew up with. Even though she is the favorite, June constantly hurts her chances by never studying and blowing off most anything to do with school.

Tokyopop has the habit of putting out manga that should never be published. They glut the market with throwaway titles like Little Queen which detracts from the buying power of their customers. But I guess I shouldn't complain. I'd rather have too many titles to choose from than too little. Anyway, back to Little Queen. It's a waste of money. First of all, the writer doesn't give you a lot of info to work with. It's never really gone into detail exactly what the Queen of Light is and no specifics are given about her powers or purpose. You would think in a title where the main characters are vying to be the Queen of Light, you could at least explain what being Queen means. You're not given too much info about the setting either, or the forces of darkness. Everything is just kinda thrown out there in a jumbled mess to probably be explained in a later volume that I will never read. While the art is pretty good, Yeon-Joo's pacing and storytelling leaves a lot to be desired, with many self-conscious and annoying nods to the reader in the work. There are also some character asides in the book whose speaker is unidentifiable. All in all, Little Queen is pure dreck and should be avoided.

A really good manga along these same lines is Ultramaniac from Viz's Shojo Beat line.
