Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-- Little Rabbit Foo Foo hops through the forest, picking up various creatures--field mice, wriggly worms, tigers, and goblins--and bopping them on the head with his red mallet. The Good Fairy warns him to stop, but finally turns him into a goon. This slightly retold version of a popular children's song has a lot of energy; unfortunately, Rosen includes neither music nor even a preface to let readers know that the tune is the same as "Down by the Railroad." The illustrations are bright, cheerful, and clearly detailed, if somewhat reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons. Amusing, but not an essential purchase--acting out the song is still more fun than reading it aloud. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Public Library, CA

"Simple and hilarious... I laugh every time I think about it. Arthur Robins' pictures are a barely controlled riot." Susan Hill, The Sunday Times; "Full of life and hilarity... A compulsive story-time book." Child Education --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars KIDS OF ALL AGES LOVE THIS ONE., August 25, 2010
This review is from: Little Rabbit Foo Foo (Paperback)
This is one of the funniest, most amusing and quirky little children's books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I can tell you truthfully, I have yet to read this to a kid that did not like it and either giggle or smirk over the thing. The song, Little Rabbit Foo Foo has been around for years but this work was first published in 1990.

The story consists of a small rotten little rabbit. This little guy has a large hand-held net, a large wooden mallet and a motorcycle. The delinquent little bunny spends his days riding around the forest scooping up various critters such as field mice, wriggly worms, tigers and finally goblins, and then bopping them all on the head with his hammer. Needless to say, Little Bunny Foo Foo is not a very popular member of the forest community.

Finally the Good Fairy comes down and warns the little rabbit bully that he has three chances to mend his ways or she will turn him into a goon! Well of course the little guy does not listen, develops an attitude and keep right on riding and bopping. He goes over the line and reaps his just reward.

The text is extremely catchy and you will find yourself and the kids humming it and wording it even when the book is not being read.

"Little Rabbit Foo Foo
riding through the forest,
scooping up the wriggly worms
and bopping them on the head."

The art work by Arthur Robins is quite good enough to stand alone even without the wonderful words of the author. Each picture is very unique and you can spend a lot of time just discovering little details that you missed during previous readings. The expression on Bunny's face and all of the forest creatures is absolutely delightful.

This is one of those books that children will carry with them in their heads for a life time.

About the only people who will not be fond of this work are adult who take themselves too serious and are in sore need of a sense of humor. The kids certainly get it anyway.

And yes, the book I am reading here is the version where the rabbit is actually turned into a "goon" rather than a "goonie," and this is the version with the wonderful closing line of "The moral of the story: Hare today, goon tomorrow!" In some newer editions this has been changed which is a true pity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Naughty little rabbit., January 9, 2000
This review is from: Little Rabbit Foo Foo (Paperback)
This is one of the funniest books I have read as a child and that I read to my children. It is about a rabbit whole boops animals on the head and is given three chances by the goo fairy to change. If he doesnt he gets turned into a goonie. Well little nauty rabbit foo foo doesnt listen and ends up being a goonie. Great pictures and theme that can be played like a song.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest children's book ever, April 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Little Rabbit Foo Foo (Paperback)
If you don't like this book you have no sense of humor :) The expressions on Little Rabbit Foo Foo's evil face are hysterical. Despite repeated warnings from the Good Fairy to change his attitude or be turned into a "goonie" Little Rabbit Foo Foo remains irrepressibly naughty.
