SMALL GROUP FROM THE CALIFORNIA RAMBLERS,
By
This review is from: Little Ramblers 1924-1927 (Audio CD)
This compilation features The Little Ramblers which, as its name implies, was drawn from the ranks of the California Ramblers. Like its parent group, the mainstay was Adrian Rollini, that consummate master of the bass sax. It omits the two earlier 1924 sessions, on which he confined himself to goofus and kazoo, and begins in September when he began deploying that unwieldy instrument.
The group's size fluctuated between five and seven with the likes of Chelsea Quealey, Red Nichols and the Dorsey brothers featuring in various recording sessions. This was after all a studio group, and personnel varied according to availability. On the other hand this was a select group of musicians who knew each other and played together in different combinations, with the result that they produce a very satisfying ensemble punctuated by hot solos. Remastering is by the late John R.T. Davies, and a discography and informative illustrated liner note is included, although what Eddie Lang's photo is doing when he's nowhere to be heard is a mystery.
