4.0 out of 5 stars "How About a Nice Doorknob? Would you Like to Buy That?", October 18, 2005
This review is from: Little Rascals 13 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Leonard Maltin opens this tape with a short commentary on the episodes.

"Bargain Day" from 1931 begins the tape. In it, Chubby is buying a new hat, but he cannot find one that he likes. The kids wreck the store and are kicked out. They find that Wheezer has taken all of their toys because he has the "peddling craze again" and is out to sell everything. The scene cuts to Wheezer and Stymie out knocking on doors and asking people if they'd like to buy something. They find little Shirley Jean, the poor little lonely rich girl. There is some very funny child banter which leads to Stymie exploring the house and Wheezer trying to sell Shirley doorknobs and balls. The other kids catch up to them and marvel at all of the luxuries of rich homes. It is a fast paced, clever film.

The second film is "Free Eats" from 1932, a film that centers around a rich woman holding a banquet for all of the poor children in the neighborhood. However, there are crooks in the neighborhood. Four men are hiding out after a botched bank robbery. Two of the men are midgets, or "fidgets" according to Stymie. They come to the party with the gang and Stymie is the only one who sees through their disguise. The two "babies" manage to steal all of the jewelry from the rich women. This decent film marks Spanky's first appearance in which he is featured in a long scene in which he babbles about a monkey and a rat.

"Night 'n' Gales" from 1937 was the first appearance of Johnny Arthur as the ever-frustrated Mr. Hood. Here, Arthur is being serenaded by the delightful chorus of Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Spanky, and Porky singing "Home Sweet Home" over and over again. When they've finally finished after countless rounds, Mr. Hood shoos them to go home. Then the rainstorm hits. The boys are forced to spend the night- in the same bed as Mr. Hood. They absolutely torture him innocently, resulting in some highly polished but uninspired gags.

The last film on this tape is "Feed 'Em and Weep" from 1938. It also featured Mr. Hood. This time it is his birthday and his family has prepared a nice dinner for him. He is interrupted when the boys show up to give him their presents: various animals and a song. Eventually, his entire dinner is spoiled and the boys go home without a clue as to why Mr. Hood didn't have a happy birthday. Again this is a quick and highly polished film ridden with frustrating humor.
