3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag, February 12, 2004

This review is from: The Little Rascals/Our Gang: Collector's Edition (DVD)
This set is a mixed bag for Rascals fans. On one hand, none of the episodes (except "Waldo's Last Satnd" from the bleak post-Hal Roach era) are clunkers. The silent era is well represented with The Fourth Alarm(forerunner to "Hook and Ladder"), Mary Queen of Tots (perhaps the most charming of the silents, featuring the early Rascal's cutie pie Mary Kornman), Sundown Limited, Derby Day (which contains a nice scene in which rich Mary Kornman sneaks her poor Rascals pals into the horse race), and Dogs of War (the gang turned loose in a movie studio). The silent Our Gangs will not usually cause you to slap your knees in laughter, but they are a pleasant and relaxing way to spend twenty minutes and these are among the best of the bunch.

The more familiar sound Rascals are represented here too with classics like Hi Neighbor (where they build their own fire engine), The Pooch (where Stymie tries to save Pete the Pup's Life), Follies of 1938 ("I'm The Barber of Seville"-Need I say more?), Teacher's Pet, and Bear Shooters. Only problem is that the latter two otherwise great films are so blurry that you can barely make out what's happening. Diamond Entertainment has a really poor track record of this and their DVD's should be approached with caution. Other than that, Rascals fans will enjoy.
