5.0 out of 5 stars A New Twist on an Old Story!
What would the Brothers Grimm say if they could read this? Could they have predicted a savvy bike-riding "Little Red"; or a Muffin-Loving Wolf; or a liberated, tough-talking Granny, who is also a very good cook? How could they object to such a delightful interpretation of their sometimes gruesome story? Kids love this book, and so do I!

Cute and witty! I checked this book out at the library to read to my boys and wound up buying it for my grandmother! For all tractor-driving grannies or people who love them, this book is a big hit! I love the recipie in back, too. (Great literature tie-in activity!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Mess with Grandma, April 22, 2011
This review is from: Little Red Riding Hood - A Newfangled Prairie Tale (Aladdin Picture Books) (Paperback)
Children absolutely love twists on the old fairy tales, and there are now many versions that provide new perspectives, and teaching moments to these classics. Students can make comparisons between the traditional and the new, as well as delve into the study of perception (how does our understanding of the story influence our predictions), perspective or point of view (whose telling the story and does that change how we feel about the character).

In Lisa Campbell Ernst's tale, all the key story language elements are included, they are just switched up and given alternate explanations. So Little Red Riding Hood is so named because she always wears a red hooded sweatshirt. The wolf does indeed smell a delicious smell, but in this case it's the homemade muffins that Little Red is taking to her grandma. Little Red does ignore her mother's warning and talks to a stranger (wolf), but he doesn't want to eat Little Red. There is a grandma in the story, but she is one tough old bird, and quickly takes Wolf down; and along the way it is the Wolf who speaks the classic lines about the eyes, and ears. In the end, no one dies, and it's a positive "win-win" for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful book for all ages., September 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The wolf was "looking for the frail, loony, muffin-baking granny" ... and was grabbed by his suspenders by this tractor-driving granny. I don't know who enjoyed this more - my granddaughter or me! The illustrations and surprise ending are perfect.

Lisa Campbell Ernst pulls off another great fractured fairy tale! Read this one to celebrate biking, a new version of the "hood," and a fabulous ending! No one's eating this grandma!!
