An excellent album, what can you really say with words?,

This album is one of my favourites by woody shaw. When i first heard it, i was struck by how different woody's improvisations sound in comparison to other trumpet players. the thing i like about woody is how wide his lines are. he plays lots of open intervals such as fourths and fifths. Most trumpet players play diatonically and woody expanded the vocabulary of the instrument in that way. some reviewers and peers of woody have said that he invented a musical language, and i agree with them. as far as the lineage of the trumpet is concered, woody was truly the last great innovater. This album features woody on trumpet along with frank strozier on alto sax, ronnie matthews on piano, stafford james on bass and eddie moore on the drums. I like the light touch that mr. strozier plays with. dig the lines on sashianova and jean marie. also, mr strozier and woody really lock in together on the heads. it sounds as if they had been playing with each other for quite some time, although i believe that this might their only record date together. The rythm section of mr mathews, mr james and mr moore is legit. they interact nicely with woody and his dancing lines. i saw ronnie mathews play a month back and he still sounds amazing. eddie moore is rock solid, i felt the pulse in every song and he was in the pocket throughout. Also check out the bass solo by stafford james on little red's fantasy, i think its very colorful. the bass solo is melodic and it sounds as if he is playing a horn. ive been rambling and dont think there are words to describe music, really. a review is just someone's opinion of what they hear. i think this one of my favourite albums and if you are looking for a woody shaw album than this is a good one to check out woody's originality and conception.

Unfortunately, Woody Shaw, the most innovative jazz trumpeter of them all as far as language, and equally brilliant as a composer, never came close to getting his due in his all too short and tragic life. Little Red's Fantasy is his brightest gem compositionally. The tunes In Case You Haven't Heard, Tomorrow's Destiny, and Little Red's Fantasy are classic representations of Shaw's compositional style, containing all of the definitive elements of Woody's writing style, as well as many of the points of departure for his brilliant improvising. Mr. Shaw's post-Coltrane explorations of synthetic scales, altered pentatonics, and wide intervals will prove to form the melodies of the future of the jazz trumpet and the jazz language in general before all is said and done. But Woody's compositional and improvisational styles appeal to the non-musician as well with their melodic, catchy hooks and grooves, and a fun, upbeat, positive quality that can lift anyone's mood. A brilliant combination of genius and fun!

A great taste from Woody Shaw!,
This review is from: Little Red's Fantasy (Audio CD)
I have waited for years for Woody Shaw's Muse catalog to come to CD. Little Red's Fantasy is one of his best. Shaw is a wonderfully creative player and composer, who always seemed to have great players join him. He swings hard, thinks hard, and deserves far more recognition. Also check out Love Dance, Rosewood, and if it ever returns on CD, the Woody Shaw Qunitet Live at the Village Vanguard.
