the music makes the film a classic,

Like one of the other reviewers, I first saw this film at the age of 12 (in 1979) and it *stuck* in my mind... especially the music, and most especially the track "Love's Not Like That." Perhaps the film was so moving because I was around the same age as the two main characters; but I think it was also moving because of the music. In fact, the soundtrack is a vital part of the film. I cannot imagine the film without the music! I was always curious about what that particular piece was, and now, 25 years later, I've finally found out! ;-)The piece was played recently during the classical program on the local public radio station, and what's more importantly, *identified* afterwards: It's Vivaldi's Lute Concerto in D, RV 93, and specifically the "Largo" movement. It's sometimes called the Guitar Concerto, since that's the modern instrument used instead of the lute. I looked it up here on Amazon and found versions by both John Williams (the guitarist, on his "Seville Concert" album) and by George Fernandez (on an album which includes Rodrigo's "Concerto de Aranjuez"). Anyway, I highly recommend this soundtrack or the original Vivaldi piece for romantic evenings, for wistful memories of first loves, and for weddings ;-)

Unforgettable,
This review is from: A Little Romance: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I saw this movie as a 12 year old in 1980 on a flight from the Far East to Europe. I was so bored on the plane and when they started the movie most passengers were asleep. I was completely mesmerized by the movie and the story was so touching and innocent; two young teenagers fall in love and are fearful of losing each other so elope to Venice to kiss under the Bridge of Sighs so that they may remain in love forever. I never saw the title so did not know the name of the movie but remembered it vividly. By chance I saw it on cable TV 5 years ago and was totally reduced to tears by the end. This is one of the few movies about true love and the pain one endures to find and keep it. A very well made movie which will be a favourite for those who like romantic films, in the same genre of Cinema Paradiso and Il Postino. A gem.

This soundtrack has haunted me since I first saw "A Little Romance" back in the early 1980s. I purchased and listened to a ton of Vivaldi CDs (which in itself was a pleasure!) trying to find Delerue's music! I highly recommend it - it's one of the few soundtracks that I don't find myself skipping bits of to get to the "good stuff" - it's all good!

(...) This score compliments the film very well. One of the classics in my opinion. Yes, yes, to each his/her own. I am sure I'll be scoffed for saying such a thing with all the "greats" out there. Whatever, I don't care what anyone thinks! In my opinion, you haven't got romance in your life if you have a difference of opinion (of which I *will* permit you to have). The film is genuine, sincere and delicately passionate. It's quiet, beautiful, fun, sweet and so much more. By the end of this film, no matter HOW many times I have seen it - I am always in tears and full of smiling sighs. (Yes, I do own a copy, and God knows how many times I've seen it!) The piece I found truest to this score vs. the film was the piece by Vivaldi. They could not have found a better selection. It captured the true essence of longing, of romance. One of the best films ever created, accompanied by a wonderful score. It's beautiful any which way you look at it. Well, those who *choose* to look at it as such ;) I know I do... Highly recommend this film AND the soundtrack!!

GREATEST FILM SCORE EVER,

I'm always deeply touched whenever I hear Delarue's magnum opus. Tears flood my eyes when I'm watching ALR and I hear this fantastic score flood the screen (literally overpowering the actual movie sometimes). This is definitely Delarue's greatest work, and probably the best film score out there (although Goldsmith has done some pretty good stuff). BUY THIS NOW!!!!!

I remember the first time I saw this movie- I was watching it on Turner Classic Movies around midnight, while I was packing for a trip. I ended up having to pack AFTER the movie was over because I was just so engaged with the movie and the music was absolutely stunning. Makes me want to go to Italy myself. I like all of the songs. This is a carefree movie and it makes the world at that time seem carefree I wish I could go back to that time period. The music on this soundtrack does evoke good feelings in you =)

While I was in college at Georgia State University I used to go to a movie every Friday after my morning classes. I saw a lot of movies that way: some good, some bad, but most immediately forgetable.
Once in while I got a surprise. A Little Romance was the best of the lot, a totally uplifting, funny, charming, poignant experience that will stay with me forever. The best thing of all was the magnificent musical score by George Delarue. It took me ten years to find the score on CD, it remains one of my favorites to this day. Exhilirating and worth the cost...

A Little Romance Lasts Forever!,

The movie, A LITTLE ROMANCE, has always been a favorite of mine and many, in my age group, must still smile at the very thought of this little teen romance. Yet, I cannot believe how many people have not seen this film!!! Go find it - buy it - never give it away.
French life always enhances any film, but this is just A GREAT MOVIE! We have all been young. I am a 78 year old widow but I still love this film. The music keeps coming up in background music for different things I hear - I recognize it - it takes me back to Bogie and Lauren (the characters in A Little Romance) and the absolutely delightful love they had. I have purchased the movie in VCR and then DVD but always seem to give it away. Someone picks it up at our home, says he or she has not seen it - I say they need to own it. "Goodbye, A Little Romance!" Out the door it goes. Constantly replacing the DVD. MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO FIND BUT AMAZON DOES COME THROUGH! Have had dreams of a sequel and keep telling people that the stars are mostly still alive - except Laurence Olivier - but they could take Diane Lane back to Venice, have her meet the boy, Thelonious Bernard, who is now a dentist in Nantes. Have them never to have married (?) or not, but have them single and going back to the Bridge of Sighs - one more time. It is just such a great possibility. Someone do it! Flash backs? Wonderful movie. Wonderful music. But, for now? I am looking to buy an old second hand CD of the music and have just found one on Amazon. Surely others feel the same way. I am grateful anyone will sell his old copy. I heard the Vivaldi music yesterday on a Catholic station as background music for a program. Made me lonely for A Little Romance, for sure . . . even at 78, widows are never too old for A Little Romance!

Beautiful Music,

I saw this film on TV in my teens & really enjoyed it. After that i forgot the title of the film ( but thanks to the internet was able to find out) . But I always remembered the music and had no idea who it was by till i heard the concerto played on the radio. At the time i just bought a classcial CD that featured the vivaldi concerto and didn't think to buy the original soundtrack. A decade on, after watching Diane Lane in 'Under the Tuscan Sun', i was prompted to seek out 'A little Romance' CD/film. I was disappointed to find out that the CD was out of print & unavailable in any shops. However, i have recently been able to purchase it used from an auction & the music is brilliant.
I particularly like the 2nd half of the Bicycle Race (the start is bit too loud for me but it gets calmer in the 2nd half). I also like the Main theme, the uplifting Gondola and Farewell..for now/End title. The jazzy songs are ok but the vivaldi music is the best! I'm surprised that A Little Romance has not been re-released on CD as the music is so good & considering Georges Delerue won an Oscar for it. |
