ANOTHER CARLE CLASSIC,
This review is from: 10 Little Rubber Ducks (Hardcover)
Some years ago there was a story about a ship that was carrying a load of Rubber ducks from China. In a storm several crates were swept off the ship and these little rubber ducks floated virtually all over the world. I guess maybe that story influenced this Eric Carle books about a bunch of toy ducks that pop out of a machine freshly painted and packed 10 to a box and loaded onto a ship.
A box of 10 goes overboard and each of the 10 little ducks goes on their own separate journey of exploration and adventure to all parts of the globe. One even encounters a mother duck with her own little duckling children. It's a delightful tale and beautifully illustrated, as you would expect, by Carle. His use of colors in his collages is dazzling. If you've had his previous books and enjoyed them, you're sure to love this one too.

Once again, Eric Carle teaches about a dozen concepts using about 10 words. I exaggerate, but only a little. This book teaches counting, including ordinal numbers. The ducks drift off in different directions such as left, right, up, and down, as well as the compass points. The rubber ducks encounter different animals, and the animals that the ducks meet correspond to the compass points. For example, the rubber duck that goes north sees a polar bear. The first couple pages succinctly describe the manufacturing/shipping process, something hard to find in preschool books. (At least, it's hard to find in terms they understand, Donald Crews "Truck" aside.) And the squeaker duck at the end is wonderful surprise!

Excellent Book for Emergent Readers,

As an Early Childhood professional I am always looking for goods books rich in language, story and pictures. This book is one of Eric Carle's best books. I am a teacher/owner of Oceanside Pre-Kindergarten a unique Literacy based program to help children prepare for Kindergarten in today's intense learning environment in formal education.
I purchased this because the theme related to my school. Ten Rubber Ducks ia an Award Winning book that is rich in language, includes math, beautiful art work and based on a true story with a big surprise for the children at the end of the story - the rubber duck squeaks. I allow children to borrow my books and this one everyone wanted to take home over and over again. I have purchased another for a friend whom borrowed it and her four children loved it. It is truly a book I will purchase as a gift for children on my gift list. I love to see a child's face light up and smile to a good story and Eric Carle can tell a story with both words and pictures to delight us all.

Kids Love Carle's Colorful Books,
By
This review is from: 10 Little Rubber Ducks (Hardcover)
"In 1992, a shipment of 29,000 bathtub toys fell overboard from a container ship. Eric Carle read a newspaper account that related how the various ducks, beavers, turtles, and frogs had bobbed their way to the shores of Alaska, through the Bering Strait, around the northern coast of Greenland, and into the Atlantic Ocean. According to Carle, 'I could not resist making a story out of the newspaper report.' Carle's story follows the fates of 10 imaginary rubber ducks that are washed overboard from a cargo ship and are swept away in all directions. Small readers and listeners will empathize with the little ducks' plight as they are lost at sea, and then rejoice at the heartwarming surprise ending. (Be sure to "Press here" in the appropriate place on the inside back cover for the book's full effect!)" (summary by South Texas Library System)

For those who collect Eric Carle's books for children or anyone who loves great children's picture books....10 Little Rubber Ducks is so cute and my one year old loves the "squeak" at the end. For teachers, it is perfect for numbers, counting, etc.

I bought this for my 2-year old granddaughter. She LOVES it. There's a squeaker at the back of the book that she presses before we begin and also at the end. It's beautifully illustrated.

I chose the book first because I enjoy Eric Carle's work. My kindergarten students and I both find his topics exciting and interesting. Next, I wanted a book which contained the digraph "ck" for a phonics lesson; both the title (10 Little Rubber Du"ck"s) and some of the words (qua"ck") in the book had exactly what I needed to demonstrate an educational concept. I was able to extend the learning into a writing lesson, as well. Ocean life/science could also be explored with the animals that the rubber duck passes in the sea. The great catch was the button on the last page, for it added a cute sound effect to end our experience!

My 3 year old sons love this book. They especially like to press the button at the end of the book to make the rubber duck squeak! In the usual inimitable Eric Carle style, there are bright and colorful collage illustations that bring the story to life.

I bought this book for my children and it's as much fun for me as it is for them. The book deals with ordinal numbers as it counts to the 10th little rubber duck. And of course, Eric Carle's illustrations are fantastic. I really liked that Mr. Carle included the newspaper article that inspired the book and shared that with my children. It was a learning opportunity for us to talk about how you write a story and what kinds of things can inspire you. The surprise (the rubber duck squeak) at the end of the book keeps my littlest one turning to that page over and over.

Eric Carle has done it again. His cute story is paired with his incredible illusrtrations. Children love it and that's what books are for! All you need is a rubber duck or ten and a tub of water (hey, it's bath time!) and you have a recipe for laughter and fun.
