5.0 out of 5 stars Criminally Unknown, just like the Famicom "Moon Crystal", January 8, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

Little Samson
Five stars - Criminally Unknown, just like the Famicom "Moon Crystal".

We come to one of the greatest mostly unknown NES titles ever: "Little Samson". An action platform adventure title (which is what the NES is famous for), "Little Samson" has multiple characters you can use at any given time, each with different skillsets, great boss fights, spot on difficulty, and just fantastic gameplay.

"Little Samson" came relatively late in the NES's game cycle. Taito released the game in 1992. One of the most technically impressive NES titles, "Little Samson" features large boss sprites, detailed environments, and extensive gameplay reminiscent of the "Mega Man" titles and "Super Mario Bros." The game is as solid as other notable franchises from the NES era, such as "Castlevania", the aforementioned "Mega Man" games, "Metroid", "Adventure Island", etc.

Unfortunately, highly quality does not always dictate high sales, and "Little Samson" is largely a victim of bad timing in a video game market that was mostly migrating toward the more powerful sixteen bit consoles.. "Little Samson" had very low sales, making the cartridge one of the most highly sought after for NES collectors.

In "Little Samson" you can control four characters: Licke, Dragon, Golem, and Mouse. Each features their own disadvantages and advantages. The game comes with easy and normal difficulty settings. If you select normal, if one of your characters dies other than Lickle, you cannot use that character for that stage. I have long thought about writing a quiz over this game, it's that great. Sadly, it's also very obscure. "The Krion Conquest" is another good obscure NES title also similar to "Mega Man".

Another great (unknown) title is the Famicom exclusive "Moon Crystal", which, like Little Sampson, is as good as any of the other major heavy hitters from the NES canon. I feel had "Moon Crystal" been localised and captalized on we could have had a whole new franchise.

"Little Samson" was given an indepth review in Volume 40 of Nintendo Power, and they gave it a great review as well. That just goes to show how even back then in the early 1990s just because you made it into Nintendo Power didn't mean your game were going to do well. Just like "Power Blade", which appeared on the cover of "Nintendo Power", the title just did not do that well commercially.

If you get a chance and you love NES titles, PLAY IT! You won't be disappointed.

The video game website IGN rated this title as the 93th greatest game on their top 100 NES games of all time. I think the only reason "Little Samson" got rated so low was mostly due to the obscurity. IT IS THAT GOOD!

This seems like your standard side-scrolling adventure platform (and it is) but it is definitely an enjoyable game. The graphics and gameplay are fairly smooth. One of the things that make this game so nice is that you can switch between four characters, and each character enables you to do something the others can't. The mouse gets through narrow spaces, the rock dude can walk across spikes, the dragon can fly (for a limited distance) and the guy is an good overall character. You have two options for this game, Easy and Normal (I never saw an Hard option) Easy is well... easy, and Normal really isn't that hard. The boss fights are also not that hard, even the final boss. I do wish there were more levels in this game, but overall it's still a great and solid game for the NES.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the top 10 NES games, November 4, 2007

It is unfortunate that this game is so hard to find as it is one of my favorites for the NES. A similar gameplay style to the Mega Man series, you get to control different characters with different attributes and weapons. Gain power-ups to make your weapons stronger, switch characters during gameplay, standard stuff but much better executed than most games of its ilk. It gets a bit hard near the end but is not unbeatable. It took me about 15 tries to get it. No broken controllers, although if I had this when I was younger... maybe.
