Little Sister - a Dutch treat,
By Jos Meijer (Baarn, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Little Sister [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Little Sister is a weird pseudo-documentary. A boy in his twenties has come back to shoot a videofilm about his sister, who is a few years his junior. At first she does not mind, but when he invades deeper and deeper into her private life, she starts resenting him. Yet for some reason she cannot get rid of him. Gradually you sense that the two siblings share a dark secret. What that is, I will not reveal here, but the denouement is extremely touching, although slightly predictable. This movie is hip and fast because what you see is what the older brother actually records with his camera, including slanted, out of focus and jumping shots. You soon get used to them. The main attraction lies in the wonderful acting performance by "little sister ", Kim van Kooten. The camera falls in love with her, and so will you. The movie paints a vivid picture of end-of-the-century Amsterdam, confirming all cliches about this city of easy love and easy dope, but at the heart lies a moral tale: you cannot run away from your past, is what it tells you.
