Too good to be true!, December 1, 2007
This review is from: Little Sleep Machine (Misc. Supplies)
Ok, so....I have had trouble sleeping for years. Menopause, a snoring husband, full time job, yadda yadda. I have tried many products over the years, but this little machine is fantastic. It is reasonably priced, so if it doesn't work for you, pass it on. I am buying a second one for a backup. My first one I purchased used on Amazon and it tends to skip. Better to buy new. Sweet dreams!

Worst Device Imaginable, April 11, 2008
This review is from: Little Sleep Machine (Misc. Supplies)
The Sleep Machine recordings are fine and you can get them on CD but this player is unbelievably poorly designed:
1. It has a bright flashing LED light when playing. That's very helpful in a dark bedroom when you have insomnia. (What were they thinking!?)
2. It doesn't automatically shut off once the three tracks have played so the player stays on for 8 hours -- shining and flashing. Which means you have to replace the battery every single day. If you travel with it you need to take all those batteries or rechargeable ones and a recharger. (What were they thinking!?)
3. The controls are on the edge of the player -- where your finger wrap around when you pick it up. So when you reach for it you're likely to shut it off or otherwise unintentionally press one of the buttons.
4. There's no receptor to allow you to use an adapter so you could do without the battery. Yes, this would have made it more expensive but much, much more usable.

As a sleep-inducing/maintaining device, it's worthless., April 17, 2008
This review is from: Little Sleep Machine (Misc. Supplies)
My husband snores--not loudly, but he changes the level of his volume and the types of noises he makes, enough to prevent me from getting to sleep or staying asleep. I thought that this device might be a solution to my having to retreat to the sofa, but no use.
In order to drown out the sound of his snoring, I would have to have the volume up to a point where it would be injurious to my hearing. So, that's one failure.
As another reviewer pointed out, there are clean "breaks" between each of the pieces -- sufficiently jarring to wake you up if you are asleep, or are nearly asleep.
I don't find the selections "creepy" at all, but then I like music of this type -- but it certainly isn't sleep-inducing.
I didn't notice the "flashing LED light" (again, mentioned by another reviewer), but that's because I put the device into a little cloth bag on a long (comfortable cloth) strap and slung it over my shoulder and around my neck -- so I'd know where it was, and in case I needed to get up for other reasons.
Perhaps having the available CD running in the room for three hours would be a better solution if someone else's snoring is the issue. The volume could be better adjusted, as it would be in the room, rather than in the ears.
The mini-device might work well for the solitary sleeper, although it didn't do me any good last night even after I abandoned the bedroom for the sofa.
I gave up and shut it off, so I don't know about the device's inability to shut itself off once the segments have played through. If that is indeed the case, it's certainly a major flaw in the engineering of this "MP3 Player." But then, what can you expect for $29.95?
The earbuds, by the way, are quite comfortable. I sleep on my side and had no discomfort at all.
I'm going to keep it, by the way. I got it, NEW, for only $17.74 plus S&H via Amazon, so I'm not out all that much. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone at this point, and certainly not at full price.
I'll probably give it another shot or two, just to be fair about it. Perhaps, as long as I'm not "driving or operating heavy machinery," it would make for a good relaxation session, or for meditation. As a sleep-inducing/maintaining device, it's worthless -- at least to me.
Another thought.... Have they done any research into whether or not some people may not be affected by these particular pieces??? Or by the underlying Delta rythms??? Maybe it's just me?!?
